What do you use when mounting a scope base and rings?  Red or Blue?  Thanks

Blue is removable and should be used. I would never use red on any gun or mount.

When in doubt always use blue...for all the mentioned reasons. If you pm me an address I will send you samples. Got a whole drawer full on them.

The standard blue is 242 i think.  Another one that is blue is 222MS which is specifically made for small screws.  Either should work, but the 222MS is a little better for the small scope screws.  Another good one is 243 (its also blue) which works in the presence of oil where the others are supposed to have all traces of oil removed.

Yea, I know way to much about Locttite.  We use a bunch of it at work.  The upside is the Loctite rep. takes care of me when I run out.

Loctite Red is a no-no,,,,,,you won't be able to get the screws out later if you need to. You'll have to have them drilled out and then have the barrel retapped and threaded.....costs too much

OK, so let's say somebody does mess up and use red high strength loctite.  Is there a softening agent to help soften the bond so the screw can be removed?  Is lacquer thinner or toluene a softener?

Heat, or a drill will remove screws put in with red.  Red it very good for screws that will never be removed.  We use it in the Aerospace industry some.

I have not seen the correct answer yet, PURPLE is the loctite made specifically for the size screws we are talking about with scopes and mounts. If you cannot get it, and it is difficult to locate, as everyone here correctly suggested, the second best choice is to use blue, which most people do.
DO NOT use red locktite on guns....<><.... :)

I have used red a couple times knowing full well I probably would encounter problems later. What surprised me is I did not have problems removing scope base screws and I did not strip the head either. Is there a shelf life on the stuff though that renders it less strong?

I suspect the amount was possibly not enougn either because there was a M1 Garand gas plug I got sick of finding loosened using green loctite so I applied red to it. A year later it took the assistamce of two other men to remove it. And I applied it to the barrel on the M1 Garand after finding it loose hardly 200 rnds after I had a gunsmith replace the barrel. I hand tightened the barrel because I simply had to have it for a shoot the following weekend. It's still tight and I have no clue what is going to happen come the day I want a different barrel :-\

A lot of times the red can be removed - but not always - so best not to use it.

I went and looked at my 222MS, and as one poster stated it is more purple than blue, that is the correct number for small screws.
