Author Topic: Inexpensive Airgun to Dispatch raccoons (Read 5180 times)

I have have a few raccoons visit the garage recently. After 5 shoots with the Beeman Tempest with 2 good head shoots the critter was un-dispatched.

It is very clear I need a better high powered airgun, I dont want to discharge a firearm in the garage. Any suggestion on an inexpensive airgun that can handle this application would be appreciated?

Racoons are tough. I wouldn't use anything less than a .22LR.

look at one of the 1000fps daisy or crosmans at walmart for 100-120$. I killed one at 15 yards with my 685fps airgun. Oh yeah use crosman or a really hard pellet because softer one don't get it done.

One arrow straight through the vitals, and one taking half of his skull off and the little mustard still growled and tried to come at me. Get something bigger than a pellet gun, safety permitting.

Yeah, good advice - us a .22lr - those 1000fps airguns at wallyworld are just gonna piss him off...and if you do get in a good shot, it's still not going to be a humane kill.

My preference is a 12ga, .223, .40 or .357 sig.

In the garage I am not likely to discharge a firearm. Next time I might just chase it out then call it in later when it is out side and dispatch it with the 12 ga.

Also, it walked past a trap with corn in it....

Coons are tough. I'd agree, .22LR as a minimum. Of course, thats a problem in a garage. I've killed them with a Crossman 880 (I think) with an eye shot, but it was too perfect to pass on. Of course, I know guys who have killed deer with a .22LR too. You've got the idea. Chase 'em out and bust them with something suitable.

you could use a slingshot. they will kill them with one shot with 38 steel. I have killed bever at 12 yards with one shot with my slingshot.

Use your 22 with CB caps (cat bullet). They are as quiet as most pellet guns and seem to kill well.

I like the cb idea, my friend has a crank out window in his garage and when the squirrels get into the bird feeders he cranks out the window, aims his revol;ver loaded with cb's and pop.

Any decent underlever oughta do it. Grasp it by the barrel end, yield it like a Louisville slugger, and swing for the fences. Otherwise, I wouldn't consider annoying a raccoon with a few pesky pellets.

Try an AirForce Condor in 22 cal. using either Kodiak or Eun Jin pellets. Head shots only, all one shot kills

Yeah, I got an AirForce TalonSS with a LW 24" .20 barrel that pushes Eu jins at about 48fpe - does the trick very nicely.

A Sheridan Blue streak in .20 caliber (5mm) easily dispatches Racoons
with a decent head shot. Use a Cylindrical Pellet, not a skirted.

i drop them with 1250fps

get a crossmen shadow at walmart 1000fps and use some

get raptor pellets fro hunting adds 250fps to yoru gun i drop them from tree's with mine

I bought a cheapie 1,000 fps rifle at sportsman's guide. My buddy used it this past summer to dispach 8 coons in his yard. Some took a couple shots, but it worked rather well.

ive had good luck up to about 25 yards with my .177 caliber shoots at 900 fps i shoot crosman premier hollow points. gets the job done in 2 shots but i make it 3 to b sure.

A rifle with CB longs is a minimum and that's only with a "proper" hit.... I bet you we have killed over 300 with CB caps, probably a lot more than that... Behind the ear does it every time....

used a 22 cal benjamin and pulled the lead out of a nn cb or short and that did the trick for nutrea rats,,,every bit as tough as a coon... had to be really short range, though..

I HAVE A BEEMAN RS2 FROM WAL MART AND I GOT A COON WITH ONE SHOT TO THE HEAD FROM 35 YRDS WITH .177 AND IT DROPPED IT AFTER TWITCHING FOR A MIN, AND ABOUT 10 MINS AGO I GOT A POSSOM...THE BEEMAN RS2 FROM WAL MART DEFFINITELY IS WORTH THE 125 YOU PAY FOR IT..

The 22 heavy pellets are the best I've found for dropping coon, rabbits, squirrel and collared doves. Shot in any reasonably powerful air gun and head shots will result in a kill. I've got a old Crossman pistol, pump up and a Gamo springer and both have taken all of the above game. I have had a rabbit or coon take a second kill shot on occasion.

sorry when you started talking about head shots i just had to post that, also i was watching 28 weeks later. But most time a crosman pointed pellets has done the job for me on coons, i have also kill them with my slingshot too.

Walther has a spring piston .25 cal air rifle out for about $250. I saw tham on gunbroker not too long ago, so you may still find one there. The .25 in a skirted pellet mushrooms quite nicely and kills well.

Someone even has a 45 air gun, but good luck finding pellets for it. The 25's aren't cheap. The 22's are considerably cheaper, even for the heavy and hollow point, which are better killers.
