just picked up my new 77 hawkeye allweather in .358 win
« on: January 04, 2007, 04:36:34 PM »
picked it up today.looks pretty nice.the stainless has a new finish, doesn't look exactly like the target gray i have seen before, looks more parkerized.nice matte finish though.new lc6 trigger does seem lighter, althogh i thought it had a little creep.nice but soft butpad similar to a new remington, the synthetic stock does not come with the red butpad.i don't think it's a limbsaver i believe remngton uses those though.floorplate has a wicked nice ruger badge pretty deep relief, not just lazer etched.barrel on this model is 22".it has a pretty heavy barrel.a little heavier than i wanted.synthetic stock is new, deep checkering with ruger logos front and rear.slimmer grip and forend.
i have not had a chance to fire it yet.scope should be here tomorrow.i'll keep you folks posted.i need to gather up some loading supplies before i can do any fine tuning.later, adker

Nice. So those are starting to become available? What scope did you put on it? Burris Short-Mag?

Nice riig,
Am I correct that the 358 is the 308 necked up to 35? It ought to be bad to the bone if so.
congradulations !

Yes, the .358 Winchester is the .308 Winchester case necked up. Been around a long time, but never caught on. MANY gunwriters have scratched their heads over the years over the lack of popularity of the round. With what appears to be a current flurry of interest in calibers greater than .30, maybe this time around the .358 will get the attention it deserves.

well i finally got a chance to post some pics and follow up on my range tests, all i can say is ruger sure did their homework on this one,i am ver happy with the results from the range.
i did have to do a little massaging on the barrel channel.this synthetic stock fits really tight.i had to do some pretty heavy relief work on the forend tip, there is a big cavity inside so a dremmel with a sanding drum made quick work of it.i think i'll probably leave the barrel alone too.i can live with the extra 2".i have not chrono'd this load but,i don't really care how fast it is cause it shoots so damn good.
this target is three rounds at 100 yds.50 grns of 4895 ,200 grn hornady ,reformed rem 308 brass cci large rifle primers.here's a pick, adker

Unacceptable accuracy. You totally missed the black.
