.30-30 Conversion to .30-40 Krag v.s. 30-30 AI
« on: January 04, 2007, 05:47:05 PM »
Those of you who've had either (or both of these done), what do you think?  Which would you rather use for whitetails out to 250-300 yds?

Thanks,

  Rick

Don't take this wrong but if thats your standard intended range, then get a 308 or 30-06 barrel.
Better round and cheaper to find, buy or reload.

No offense taken, I haven't taken any shots at deer over 215 in my life even with my .308 or .280.  150 or less is more typical, though I did kill a 5 point with the .30-30 at just under 200 with the Hdy 130 spire.

 Thanks for the input,

 Rick

With 150 being more typical either would work.
Even though I'm a 30-30 nut I'd say the krag is better and can use a heavier bullet for the other bigger critters.
Just get both. ;D

You could just keep the rifle as .30-30 and use the money for rebarrel to buy Hornady leverevolution (sp?)  ammo for it.  Just a thought.   Then, you have a deer rifle for out to 300 yds.

Thanks Swampthing,

I'm already loading Hornady 130 gr @ 2653 (avg), so the Leverevolutions don't interest me until they make the bullets available as components.  That's the #3020 Hdy, not the one for the Contender.  I call it my ".308 Roberts" load.
