Marketing fur question
« on: January 05, 2007, 06:08:50 AM »
I am not very familiar with shipping to auction as I have always sold to Gronenwald in the past, but I don't think they ay much premium for well put up fur. I always put up all of my fur and believe I can do better at auction, even with commission.

What are your thoughts and experiences?

Fur that I have ready to go:

200 rats
20 coon
12 mink
5 skunk
8 beaver
30 weasels

Thanks,

Teal

I sell fur to local buyers and i send to auctions like Furharvestors and Nafa.  Sometimes you have to watch and listen to fur markets starting in summer and keep tract of  what is happening world wide.  With sending to  fur auctions in Canada you will have a percentage taken off for shipping hand handling.  Long haired furs you get charged a tumbling charge where they clean and fluff plus add brightners to furs so they  look thier best for  bidders.

Thanks Lee,

I appreciate all of your help.  I ended up sending all I had to ready to auction.  Earlier this year I sold 100 rats and some coon to groenwald.  It is nice to finally have enough fur to make spreading the risk around worth while.  I still have some rats, beaver, coon and weasels to put-up; but the majority of my fur is gone now.  I'll let ya'll know how I do.

I sell a lot of my beaver to my local buyer. In the spring I have to many beaver to get put up in a short time.I have dealt with my local buyer for almost 30 years,he knows the quality of the furs he is going to get from me.When I head north for my spring beaver--I already know what I will average on them.Your local buyer also provides instant funds.
That being said,I also send some of my furs to Nafa auction.Auctions can provide higher prices than your local buyer. But this can be a gamble, and you must wait for payment.
Nothing in this industry is a given.

can you send - on the carcus?
