45-70 barrel on an HH Frame?
« on: January 05, 2007, 07:27:58 AM »
Hey all, I know that this has been discussed before but I gotta ask.  Is a 45-70 barrel safe on a H&R frame with a "HH" prefix which designates a 1993 action?

Sorry for the simple question but I couldn't find what I wanted with the search.  Thanks guys.

The .45-70 isn't a high pressure caliber if going by H&R's standard and recommended levergun load level, but I think I'd stay away from Ruger data with the pre-'99 frames that weren't heat treated. ;)

so, is it safe to say use this frame interchangably with a newer one IF one doesn't handload to ruger levels?

I'd say yes, H&R would fit a barrel to it since it was made after 1986 and their load recommendation for the 45-70 is levergun loads. Levergun loads, depending on who's data is used runs from 28kcup to 40kcup, Ruger data can be anywhere from 35kpsi to 50kcup, SAAMI says 28kpsi for any 45-70 due to the older firearms.

Well, I've been loading some up to 40K, I'll just stick with it on the new frame then.  Thanks Quick.
