I don't think you need a class 3. I had two of them and I did not need a class three.  But $1200 is not going to get you much as far as a 50 BMG is concerned. You might get a barrel from Watson's Weapons to Snyder Arm or one of the other barrel makers that make them for the AR 15 lower. Then you have to get the AR 15 lower. Then the fun begins. Buying the ammo and putting a scope that will handle the recoil.

Now you can get a cheaper version in the Valcun arms. I got rid of mine because I did not have a place to shot it here in Delaware and the range I am a member at in Maryland banned the 50 BMG.

You guys are fortunate...can't have a 50BMG in California (thanks, Ahhh-nold).  For that matter, you can't have any rifle with a pistol grip, a pistol with the mag inserting anywhere except in the grip, a pistol over X ounces (forgot what weight), any pistol not on Kali's "approved" list, any capacity over 10 rounds, and another 1000 stupid mandates.  My votes were certainly overruled at election time.   >:(   Whew...thanks, I needed to vent.  Feel better now.

I not positive but I heard since they banned the 50 BMG in CAL.  That they made a 45 out of the bmg cartridge to make it legal also in 55 caliber i think.

Yeah, trophyhunter...I've read the same things.  There was one, like a .495, that had 97%+ of the performance of the 50BMG.  Others are simply moving the cartridge shoulder up or down a few thousands of an inch, causing enough change that it's not interchangeable with the BMG, but leaving all the performance.  Those are all high-dollar propositions, though.   :'(

It is the Barrett.416.
Specifications:
- Case Capacity 200 grains of powder
- Projectile Solid brass boattail spitzer
- Projectile Weight 400 grains
- Projectile Length 2.0 in.
- Ballistic Coefficient .943
- Cartridge OAL 4.58 in.
- Muzzle Velocity 3250 fps (supersonic past 2500 yds.)
- Accuracy Under 1 MOA
- Barrel Length Choices 32 or 29 in. (81.28 or 73.66 cm)
- Rifle Lengths 50 or 45 in. (127 or 114 cm)
- Weights 25 or 23 lbs. (11 or 10.43 kg)

The .416 Barrett is Ronnie Barrett's answer to California AB 50, legislation that was passed in 2004 which classified all .50 BMG rifles as "Assault Weapons". This required registration of existing guns and prevented new sales and transfers. Barrett refused to repair some Barrett rifles for the LAPD when Los Angeles passed the first ban on his products...
