Range Fudds - rant
« on: January 05, 2007, 03:09:10 PM »
It might be a new term here but do any of you guys run in to Fudds?  Fudds (AKA Elmer Fudds) - you know the guys.  They are the ones who show up at the range right before deer season to sign in their guns.  Its the only time they ever shoot.  They probably shoot under 5 rounds a year.  God help you if you own an AR15 which every Fudd knows is only made for killing people.  They complain and won't allow a Man silhouette on the range because in their world you are practicing killing people.

How bad are they where you live?

We can only accommodate 2 people at a time at our club (rifle) range, so if they only shoot five rounds a year, they aren't taking up very much bench time either.  Most everyone at our club seems to get along pretty well.  I don't care what anyone does as long as it is legal and safe.  And polite.

I'm with victorcharlie on this one.

What I would suggest to tell those people if they say something about the man silhouette target is this: "look friend, I'm trying to get some prcatice in on self defense for me and my family just in case the needs arises of being attacked by a thug". That should give them some food for thought.

The problem is that ranges are passing rules against having a silhouette shaped like a person because of these people.  Look - I own, shoot and enjoy shooting different guns from muzzleoaders to bolt guns, levers guns as well as evil black Ar's.  I hunt as well as target shoot.  The Fudds are the ones that buy into the whole lie that such and such a gun (ususally called Assault XXXX )should be banned because it has no use for hunting.  "They are only for killing people".  Well sorry folks but some people need to be killed!  If someone breaks into my house in the dead of night - they should be shot and I won't grab my trusty model 700 - it will be a handgun or a short barreled AR.  What the Fudds also don't seem to understand is that the 2nd has nothing to do with hunting.

Here is an example of their attitude: I take my bolt gun to the range and no one takes a second look.  I take out a Match grade AR and you see looks of dread like I am a serial killer.  Never mind that the AR is the #1 rifle used in high power matches these days.  You act nice to show them you are just an average joe shooter and they don't even seem to want friendly conversation.  My guess is that they are the California transplants moving in.

How we convert these so called shooters I don't know - but it seems their numbers are increasing.

You might want to remember there are different types of shooter. The hunter simply loves to hunt. He will come out and make sure his rifle is still sighted in from last season. That is his purpose and duty since he will be taking it out to the woods to hunt. Once the business end of his shooting is done he now ready to enjoy himself in his past time or love of hunting. Nothing wrong with this in fact if he didn't show up to check the accuracy of his rifle I would be worried. Others simply love to shoot for the emjoyment of it. They will be at the range every chance they get ( I tend to fall into this catagory).  The flip side of the Fudds is ones I have a real problem with, these guys come out with their pistols and rifles, some of which I swear are full auto and spray shots every where. Our range at the park has just recently been reopened. For the third time since summer they have had to replace the targets posts these guys shot up. Now they have put up signs "do not shoot posts"  When I see a guy take a few shots with his rifle and leave I know his knows what he is doing. He has kept his rifle in good condition over the summer knows how to  check his accuracy but when I see guys out there spraying shot everywhere just to impress someone I get up and leave. I am impressed--he has proven to me he is one person I do not want to be around.

Hey SParsons: Have you ever been to a covered outdoor range and spotted bullet holes in the eves of the roof? How'd you like to have the port next to that guy? ;)

Anyway, I guess I'm not too different than other folks, as I only have a problem with the slop-artists.

I've seen and met a few of these guys.  I find it best to ignore them.  Generally they are too ignorant or set in their ways to convert.

They are generally the same guys who scoff when you tell them that you carry a gun daily BY CHOICE, or keep a shotgun or AR close at hand around the house.  I generally have a .357 mag strapped where ever I go, but my dad thinks that I'm a fool.  He also doesn't seem to believe that a handgun is good for much beyond 'tabletop' distance, even though he has seen me and others make hits at 50 to 150 yards with open sighted pistols.

It's a 'It can't happen to me' attitude.  It's the most dangerous form of denial that a person can engage in.  These are the gun owners that we as shooters need to worry about.  They are the ones who tend to support 'reasonable' gun control efforts, even though it's a farce.  The divide and conquer mentality works because we are easy to divide and turn against one another.

I belong to a private club so anyone there pays a yearly amount as dues.  I've yet to find anyone willing to spend the cost to simply use the facilty as a sight in for a day.  I go at off times and everyone thus far is an active shooter.
I have noticed though that many of these "fudd" types I do encounter are more interested in simply the killing of the game animal than the actual sport or enjoyment of being out in nature.

I suggest we not judge what motivates a man......why he likes to hunt is his own business.......I do my thing......you do your thing....and let him do his thing.......

It's called LIBERTY..........

In a club situation, the voting members, or their representatives set the rules.  If the membership votes not to use a particular type of target then either get more involved in the day to day running of the club in order to lobby for your point of view, or find a place that allows your particular target.

Our club's founders require you be a member for three years as an associate member.   Although there are 1000 members, only about 50 are voting members......the founders thought out the club rules well, and don't have to worry much about an unfriendly take over......as the voting members vote in new voting members......

I worked with a guy like that. He only hunted geese but begrudgingly aknowledged other game as well and was very adamant that anything you can't hunt with should be banned. What people like that don't realize is that so called assault weapons look more dangerous than hunting rifles and laws banning them are easier to push on the uneducated public. That's just where it starts. Should they someday be able to ban the possesion of what they list as assault weapons, guess what? Handguns are next and then you're trusty 870.
Anyone really involved in shooting knows a rifle is a rifle is a rifle. Regardless of what it looks like, or how many rounds it holds.
I would also like to know if anyone has been bayonetted in recent memory.

I haven't heard of any, but I do remember not too far back that they wanted to do away with the right to own any rifle that had a bayonnet lug on it. I sure didn't like that one trying to become law since I like to target practice with my old 1948 K-31 so much.
