Better Bullet Speer or Sierra
« on: January 05, 2007, 03:52:31 PM »
I'm going to use Nosler Partition bullet for my 45-70 in a load Mac gave me,but my friend doesn't want to pay that much for bullets. I wrote it down but I'm pretty sure the vel. 2400.Can you push a Sierra Pro-Hunter or the Speer to those vel. in a 45-70.These are the two he wants to pick from.Any opinions.I don't reload yet I don't have a clue.dave

Hodgdon shows the Ruger data with the Sierra bullet upt to 2532fps, whether it will actually perform reliably at that velocity is another question tho. The Realguns data below may be of use to ya. The Speer data below is the only data from them that I have.

McLernon, don't get to set in the data that Speer uses, their data, and others for that matter, doesn't agree with Hodgdon as far as pressure levels, Hodgdon puts trapdoor to 28kcup, 1895 levergun to 40kcup, and Modern rifle to 50kcup!! :-\

Tween the Speer and Sierra, I'd take the Speer, but I'd take the partition over both! It's too bad y'all didn't get in on the Nosler 2nds or Cabela's sale, cabelas had em for $31.50 a box, I got my share!! Sorry, no. :-*

I never looked on the mid south site, but I have looked on the Nosler 2nds you have there ,and most of the time there out of stock. For partition I'm guessing there not cheaper anywhere. Is the pricing for them all about the same.Wonder if Wally world can get them I could use my discount.Dave

I hope they all don't go that high or I'll be using the cheaper ones.Theres not much cheap anymore about shooting. If you want to shoot a lot you got to pay for it.I love shooting big bores not 22s.What can you do.Dave

I'm sure there will be a day when the Handi won't be cheap to buy, eather.Improvements =cost :(

I'll try to find some of the test I've read about the Speer bullets...They preform close to what the Nosler's will do...and the will be a-lot cheaper than the Noslers..The factory offering is no where as fast as my load..but it still will work...I say tell your friend to go with the Speer if he doesn't want to spring for the Noslers...or you both could go in on a box of each and split the cost..The Speer bullets fly very close to the POI of the Nosler partitions till you get up to 200 yards...

well!     "Sorry, no."

i think that rather cogent comment is readily understood!

If the 45 caliber Speer Hot Cores are anything like the 100gr 25caliber then you got a winner. These bullets don't come appart are very accurate and most of all very reasonable in price. I shoot them in my 257Roberts at 3150mv deer and moose don't walk away.

I never ever killed a big game animal with a Sierra bullet, along time ago I tried a165gr Sierra bullet on a moose with a 30-06 and the bullet blew up on the hide had to reload with a 220gr CIL to finish off the moose, that was the last time I ever used a Sierra bullet.
