.308 or .30-06 Handi?
« on: January 05, 2007, 06:14:53 PM »
Which to buy a .308 or .30-06 handi.  I know, I know they are not a whole lot different but they are.  I like how the .30-06 has a little bit larger bullets in factory ammo as I don't handload.
When an Army captain asked him for the direction of the line of retreat, Col Puller called his Tank Commander, gave them the Army position, and ordered: "If they start to pull back from that line, even one foot, I want you to open fire on them."
Turning to the captain, he replied "Does that answer your question?
We're here to fight."

What are you going to be using this rifle for? Target, Hunting, ??
I love of both.
But I really appreciate the efficiency of the 308 Win. I haven't owned it in a Handi, so I can't speak from experiance, but I do in my XR and love it. For a target rifle the 308 is still a great choice.
I have used a 30-06 in a Handi, and loved it. And have taken game with it no problem at all.
I have one actually in the works right now. It's a good caliber in a Handi.
In a -06 I prefer the heavier 180 grain bullets, as thats the turning point to an advantage of the extra capacity. But both are very versitile and the 30 cals have excellent bullet choices, thats for sure.
The price of factory offerings don't differ much either between them both, as both are among the cheapest high power centerfires to shoot.

Comparing apples and apples.
Both are great with the power edge going to the 06, but I'd not feel naked with a 308.
Heck get both.

When I bought my rifle in March 2004, I actually went to buy a .308. But when they tried to order one from Sports South on the phone there were none in stock. Got the 30-06 instead, no regrets. Kind of glad now because the reason I wanted the .308 was to shoot cheap 7.62 ammo. At the time I thought this was a good idea. We all know different now, thanks to sites like this ;D.

I went with the 30-06 for a number of reasons. The main reason is that I didn't have one, and every boy needs a 30-06. I had an M1903 Springfield and even an M1917 Enfield, but no sporting 30-06. No man should be without one.

I can always get a .308 later.

Very true.  I wish I had a M1 Garand too!  Those things are the greatest battle rifle ever created.  I believe the I would rather have a .30-06
