After looking at that .32 caliber Green Mountain rifle on their website for the last 3 Months. I decided to order 1 yesterday, it is supposed to be here Wednesday. Does anyone have this or possibly used one? Just looking for some input from users. As of right now I was planning on using Swiss or Go-ex blackpowder in 3F. From what I have read on the HPmuzzleloader page it sounds like I will need to get some of the Lee dippers for measuring out the very small powder charge, it uses the .310 round balls. Is there a better way of measuring out a small charge, possibly a scale?

This rifle does not have iron sights and will need either a Red Dot or a scope. The gun will be used for small game and the range. Which type of scope would be the preferred type? I was looking on line at possibly a Tasco Pro Point or a 4-9X40 Mueller with the German #4 red dot or a Swift 2-7X40 standard scope.

Would there be a better choice of brand or model? I have also read some pretty good reviews on the Tasco Varmint 2.5-10x42. Although the useable range of this gun sounds like 75 yards would be really pushing it.

A regular scale would work best probably. For such light charges you'll want as much accuracy as you can get. Regarding range you need to shoot it to find out. Drop and group size are critical. Drop because you want the maximum PBR for an 1 1/2" target (squirrel). And group size for the same reason.

Thanks Wolfhound,
I will need to get some stuff and this help out very much. I will get a scale and pre measure my charges. I am guessing that the powder loaders will be quite small. ;D I am going to use Cayugads method and make them with pvc capped pipes.

That is an awesome rifle, and I am "green" with envy!!!  I'd like to get one, but can't justify the cost right now, if ever.

By buying one of these guns (even just considering one) , that tells me you are are probably an experienced shooter.  I think that you'd regret it if you put a cheap scope on that rifle.  It's not a long range rifle, and will never be one.  A fixed 2.5x or 4x as light and compact as possible would be plenty for any shooting you'll do.  Even if you stretch it out to 80 yards with the 4x, that would be like looking over iron sights at 20 yds.  Most shooters I know would be insulted if I told them that they can't hit something at 20 yds with open sights.  If you must have a variable, I'd look for a 1-4, 1.5-5, or something along those lines, again, as light and compact as you can find.  Names to consider would be (no particular order) Leupold, Weaver, Sightron, Bushnell Elite, and Nikon.  Forget the Tasco, not worth your time or money, even though Bushnell holds the rights for the name now.

I don't think that I'd go with a dot type reticle either.  A standard duplex or fine crosshair would work better, allowing more
precision on small targets.

My best advice is to save your dollars and get something worthy of the rifle.  Don't spend a fortune, as I definitely think that there is a point where the extra money is wasted.  I'd get a good used high quality scope over a new, low dollar one anyday.  How much do you have in your budget for a scope?

Thanks Kylekhunter 3006,
I pretty much watched that website for the past 3 Months and would imagine it hanging on the rack above the fireplace(if I had a fireplace). I was kind of hoping that they would take it off of their website, then they dropped the price $100.00 and it was too much. Although I almost passed on it yesterday when they hit me with a $54.00 tax fee, that added to the ouch factor. I checked with them before I ordered it and it uses a standard Knight breech plug, that was a big concern of mine for replacement parts. I have a Master Hunter and so the two will look good on the rack. ;)

As for the scope, the check book needs to do some recovering but then I am thinking probably around $250.00  for the scope. I was sort of thinking the same as your idea also. I usually do not use a scoped rifle as it is quite brushy type of woods here in MN. For small game it should be fun. My Dad had quite a few scoped rifles and I remember he usually would spend quite a bit on the optics or at least to the point that he could get away with before Mom asked for a divorce. ;D

Are those Nikon scopes as good of an item as the reviews sound? They sure sound like a pretty impressive scope. I had been considering a Leupold Vari III for a deer rifle, but that may be a little too pricey. If you were picking would you stay with the fixed power? This one place in my State has been really bragging up the Swift 2-7x40 scope, but I am not familiar with the brand. Like I said scopes are a really gray area for me and my Dad is no longer here to picj his brain. Any further ideas would be greatly appreciated. If I need to spend an extra 100.00-$150.00 to get it where I need to, I will do so. I would rather purchase just one time than to wish I had and have to start saving again. Besides with Winter here there is not much to buy. Although my Cabela's wish list is getting quite lengthy!

Now if only the UPS truck would get here!

Thanks,
Mike

You'll have lots of options in the $250 range.

I have had two Nikon Monarch 2-7x32, and can highly recomend them as a great little scope.  Same for a Monarch 3-9x40.  I've not used any of the other lines, Pro-Staff and Buckmasters, but many people give them rave reviews.

I currently have a Bushnell Elite 2-7x32 on a 30-06 and love it.  It's great for all weather hunting with the Rainguard coating.  Same with the 3-9x40.

I also have a Sightron SII compact 4x32 that I bounce aroung a lot.  Last rifle it was on was an Omega .50.  Brilliant optics, tons of eye relief at 4.5" and it only weighs about 8 ounces.  Short, it's just about 9" long, I think.  It's going to find a permanent home on a Wolverine youth .50 for my kids.  Then I don't have to worry about them getting scope brow.  Sightron also has a couple of nice compact variables.

The Weaver Grand Slam 4.75x40 is an excellent scope too.  One of the nicest I've used.  It kind of splits the area between 4x and 6x.  11" long and 11oz.  I've had several of the Classics too, with good results.

I'm not a fan of the big "L". Leupold makes great looking scopes, and lots of people love them.  I had 3, and had problems with all of them.  Broken crosshair, de-gasing, bad lenses.  I think that they are over-rated, but they are an American company, if that's important.  I usually consider them, but then I always get something else???  Go figure.  Yes, I am all for buying American, but look around your house and see how many things you have that are American made.

As for fixed vs variable, here's my experience.  When shooting paper/targets, yeah, I zoom the variable all over the range.  When I've been hunting, I always set them on one power, usually 4x or 5x, and I've never had the opportunity to change it when the game shows up.  I'm concentrating on the animal, and it never occurs to me to zoom in.  If I think I might jump something close, it goes on the lowest power.  I've played around a bit, and I can hit something snap shooting at 20 yds with a 4x setting as well as I can with a 1.5x or 2x, with the field of view not being a big issue.

My personal pick would be a 4x, probably the Sightron, but I'd have to decide between it and the Grand Slam.

I use vials for mine. They'll hold about 120 gr. I am planning on getting a .40 barrel for a Hawken. I have thought about getting a .32 but with the .40 a standard ramrod wil work. .40 is probably the max I'd do for a small game rifle.

Thanks Kyle,
So would the fixed 4x work for picking a squirrel out of the branches or would it be to magnified? I sure have heard great things on those Nikon scopes and just today I read a few favorable posts on those sightron scopes. I would imagime that 25-50 yards would be the maximum range for most hunting with this gun.

Would the fixed power scope also be adequate for the rifle range, considering that 75 yards would probably be the furthest range for that small ball ammo?

Some of my friends have the variable power scopes on their deer rifles and I remember them saying that they rarely changed the magnifacation when in the woods.

Wolfhound,
That was also one of my concerns with the .32 caliber. My friend told me that it is quite easy to break the thin ram-rods. I am hoping that they will be easily replaced if that should occur. I have tried finding some .32 caliber ram-rods on various web-sites and they are not very common. Hopefully the gun comes with a sturdy one. I have read some posts on using vials, are thet glass or plastic? Do you worry about breaking the glass if that is what yours are made of? My luck I would have a pocket full of broken pieces of glass, when I would be in a hurry for the next shot. What do uou do to protect them from shattering?

Mine are plastic. I just keep them in my possible bag with everything else muzzleloader related.

I don't have any problems with a  4x on small critters.  I've shot pop cans out to 150 yds using a 4x on a .17 HMR and on a .22 mag.  I'll admit that I can shoot better target groups with more magnification, most people can.  I also can tell you that once the power goes over 10x or 12x at most, I don't shoot any better, because I start being too concerned about my shaky image.  If you think about it, looking through a 4x at 25 yds is like open sights at 6 yds.  Thats 18 feet.  I don't have any problems seeing a squirrel, rabbit, or whatever at 18 feet, and I wear glasses to correct a bad left eye.

What you should do is get with one of your friends, and use his rifle to look at different small animals at varying distances out to 50 yds or so, and see if you like 3x, 4x, or whatever to take the kind of shots you that you want.  If you like lower magnification, go with that.  If you are more comfortable with a higher power like 6x, get one of those, or get a variable with a top of 7x or 9x, so you can keep the power down until you need it.

Nothing is worse than walking through the woods and then that trophy buck, rabbit, etc., jumps up right under your feet and you can't find it in your 10x setting. I've seen it happen so many times....even with experienced hunters.  I know a guy that goes to Colorado every year, for a week, and hunts public land for elk.  It's usually him and his dad, or a buddy.  They stay out all week.  He's a great hunter, but last year in deer camp, he was checking zero on his 30-06, with his scope at 12x, adjustable odjective set at 200 yds.  Next morning, a bruiser of a 12 pointer jumped up at 20 yds, and he'd forgotten to reset his scope, and all he saw was a blur of woods.  He couldn't see to make the shot.  We found out what the deer was because to guy on the next ridge dropped it with one shot of his old Savage bolt action 30-30 with a 100 yds shot, with a 2.5x Lyman scope.

To sum up, I would be more than comfortable with the 4x scope on your rifle.

Thanks a million Kyle,
You provided some great information. I am going to start reading up on and studying those Sightron and Nikon scopes. I think that I will go with the fixed power scope. I know that I was reading some where on scopes and if I remember correctly the guy really liked the fixed power scopes. He liked the idea of a more simpler design with less to go wrong, no moving parts. Especially for what I will be using this gun for.

Now I just need to start getting the check book recouped from the damage. With our lack of Winter this year in Minnesota. I could probably squeeze in some range time as soon as I get the scope.

Thanks again,
Mike

Wolfhound,
How long are those vials? They sound pretty interesting. I think the post that I was referring to used glass vials. What type of cover do they use then. Where did you find the vials? Possibly someplace like a hobby shop? I might just look around for something like those. They would be really handy for the range also. I think that I might try to find about 50 - 100, since I will be needing to pre measure the charges for this gun. Probably best to just make up a bunch at home. If I remember correctly the guy that had a write up on the .32 was using like 11-15  grains I think. I should be able to get by with some pretty small vials.

Thanks again,
Mike

HD Road King,

Another Powder Holder all pre-measured at home to take to the range is.. 35 mm Film Canisters.... Wal-mart Photo lab just tosses them all away anyhow after they take the roll of film out of them, they toss the plastics and caps in a bag under the counter.. I have gone to my Local wal-mart and Picked up 80-100 of them at one time and still have a Bunch in the shed...

I Picked them up last summer so that When I was trapping fox and coyote and such, I could drop a cotton ball into the canister and then add my favorite Lure smell, then cap it off ..when I dug a spot and bed a trap, I could then dig a 2 inch hole about 15" deep and drop the canister in the hole without the cap on it..then I could reuse that same canister later with fresh Lure added and it would attract more...

Also works for carring pre-measured Powder and the Upper area of the canisters can be pinched to make a funnel to dump into the barrel...

They Just toss them away so ask for some and they Normally just hand them over...also you could take a small label and Name what grain amount on the outside of the roll, and clear tape over it so you know Exactly what Charge ya have in it afield...

Ram Rod in a Pinch .....Also for them in a Pinch with a Broken or lost Ram Rod..... A Carbon or a Aluminum Arrow works for a Ram rod in a Pinch, and the Threads are the same I Beleave... as I used one years back as a Cleaning rod for my shotgun I recall...
Just remove the fletchings and the string Notch, Drill a small Hole at that end to slip a nail threw so you have a T handle to extract the cleaning jag with a patch, and to help load a round if need be....

Best wishes and be safe...

WGR,
Hey thanks for the input on the peep sight, I am putting a Williams peep sight on my Knight disc extreme. This .32 caliber has no sights on it and comes scope ready with the rings and mounts. I would have preferred a peep sight for the .32 over a scope for what I wanted it for. The gun will not be here until Wednesday so I have not had a chance to check it out. I am guessing that the barrle has not been pre-drilled for front sights. I would think that if the front sight area has not been pre-drilled that a front sight would not be easily installed.

Do you have that .32 caliber barrel mounted on a Hawkins style stock? This gun is an entire rifle built on a Knight bolt type gun with the Knight stock. They have a picture of it on their website at Green Mountain. My next gun purchase is going to be a traditional style muzzleloader, possibly a Hawkins. Although I came pretty close to passing on the .32 the other day when I saw a pretty nice looking Dixie Poor Boy flinter .50 caliber, it made for a tough decision.

For measuring the powder will a regular powder measure work with just 11-15 grains? The guy on HPmuzzleloading wrote that he had to use the smallest Lee dippers for the charge. If you are using the spent brass casing to measure, how do you know what amount of powder is in the casing each time?

Thanks for the information, I really appreciate the ideas.

Scottie,

I have read posts on the 35mm film cases. I was first going to try that route for the .50 caliber for this years deer season. Then Cayugad posted about just making a bunch of powder caddys from PVC pipe with one end glued and the other with an un-glued cap. He also paints one end so that he knows right away which end to open. I am thinking that I should be able to make up quite a few for really cheap. I might just stop down at the phot shop though just to see if I can get some of those containers. I would imagine that with the way digital photography is taking off those containers might become hard to find. Thanks for the idea on the arrow, the only problem is the arrow is wider than the barrel I am thinking. I thought that I might just pick up a wooden dowel that would fit just in case of emergencies.

I am going to check out that Dixie gun works as suggested above, sounds like they carry stuff for.32's. I will need some cleaning rods and stuff anyways. I have not seen any .32 caliber stuff anywhere in my town, just the bigger calibers.

Thanks again,
Mike

In the picture, it's the one on the right. It's 7ml. You sometimes see guys selling them. I've got a few hundred. I put them in 12 gauge plastic shotshell boxes for storage. I keep the shotshell box in a gallon ziplock back to keep moisture out. Each of my guns (6) has it's own box and I have another 50 vials bagged for backups. Then when I measure powder, I measure 25 shots at a time. 25 shots will last all season hunting with plenty left over. I use the old ones for practice then measure out fresh before the season and reverify my zero with the new powder.

Thank you Wolfhound!!!!

I saved the website address. I think that I might just order in a 1,000 that should last me for the rest of my life and probably my kids as well. I like the idea of the see thru vial idea. I will need to stop by my Moms house and check if she still has my old shotgun reloading stuff. We had quite a few of those plastic shotgun containers. Do the covers stay on the vials retty securely when in your pocket or pouch?

Thanks again for the great idea, I like that.

I use the vials and carry them in a buttstock shotshell holder.
