Two questions I need answers and suggestions for
« on: January 06, 2007, 11:26:45 AM »
First is the T/C that was given to me. It is in excellent condition, s/n 81664, completely original with the octagon 3030, and the octogon 45LC/410 10" barrels. I never shot the gun, and it doesnt look
like anyone has fired it much at all. Now since I have my hunting rig
I have decided to put it away. Is it worth saving, or should I just load it up and use it?

Second is that the problem I had with the open sights on the 44 mag. was not the gun but my eyes. My groups with it at 100 yards expands out to 8", with 240's. However my 3030 with scope are @ 2" with 150's.
I actually like shooting the 44 mag. more than the 3030, maybe its just the hole size that gets me. I have read
as much as I can find on the two calibers, but I really need seasoned hunters response to: keep the scope on the 3030, or move the scope to the 44 mag. and hunt deer and hogs with it. Maximum range will be 100-125 yards. And also my son is standing by for the 3030 to be put on the above referenced contender for his use.

You will definitely be more accurate with a scope than without.  Also type of bullet/load has a major influence on accuracy.  Generally you will get better accuracy with, specific to pistol,  handloads for a Thompson than with factory loads.

Now unless the frame/barrels are some type of collector set etc... I don't know why you would "put them away".  Buy another scope set up so each barrel is set to go and shoot em.

I am no expert at the Thompson pistol thing, but this is what I would do. ;D  You will get much more enjoyment (as will your son) if things are set up right and used rather than just pulled out and looked at on occaision.

A scoped TC in .44 mag is certainly up to killing deer at 100-125 yards with no problem IF the shooter is up to it. I've gotten three shot groups under an inch from a couple of .44 Mag TC barrels at 100 yards so they can be made to shoot.

I'd just buy another scope and leave the one on your .30-30 and that way you'll have two you can shoot well. Scopes are not all that expensive, I think I paid under $100 a piece for a couple of handgun scopes I picked up off the GBO classifieds awhile back. If you'll keep an eye out you should be able to pick up 2X or 4X handgun scopes for well under $150, in fact I've NEVER paid more for a used one and usually find them for $100-125 even Leupold's.
