Substitute H-4350 for IMR-4350

Can I use H-4350 instead of IMR-4350 in a 25-06?  If so does it match grain for grain, in other words if the load call for 50 grains can I substutute 50 grains of H-4350?   Thanks  Buckfever

Just checked my Sierra software.  Based on it you would use 1 gr less of the IMR than H for similar (or max) velocity.  Both are excellent for 100 gr bullets.

The difference in 4831 powders is even greater I believe.  I split lots of 7mag necks loading IMR from an old Hornaday manual that did not specify that the load was for H-4831.  The manual just gave the powder number.  Later editions corrected the oversight.

The loading data for both IMR4350 & H4350 is similar, but NOT INTER-CHANGABLE!  Data for either powder is easily obtained at the powder manufacturer's web-site or from reloading manuals.  Either go to the powder manufacturer's sites or buy a reloading manual or two... don't take a chance on damaging your rifle... or your eyesight... or yourself to save a few bucks.

The "trade-off" isn't worth it...

The two are similar, but not the same - yet*.  H4350 is less sensitive to temperature changes than is IMR4350.  From the 2007 Hodgdon Manual, 24" .25-06, max loads with 100-grain bullets:

50.0/H4350 = 3155 fps - 51,500 cup
53.5/IMR4350 = 3290 fps - 52,900 cup

* Since Hodgdon owns IMR, they may eliminate one of the 4350 powders - just makes business sense.
