New Guy Here with New Guns
« on: January 07, 2007, 09:47:50 AM »
Hey all, I'm new to the forum but have been lurking here for awhile. Just wanted all of you Handiholics to know that my wife is mad as all get out at all of you...and me!

I got my CHRISTmas bonus from work and just had to have a new rifle. So I decided to try a Handi SB2 in .223 with the black syn. stock. I mounted a Nikon Buckmaster 3X9X40 on it and its a real shooter. I'm getting 3/4" groups at 150 yards with reloads of 50 gr Vmax and Hodgdon 4895. I went out last weekend on a daytime coyote hunt and killed a 35 lb male yote at 234 yards. He hung up way out there and would not come in. I took a pic of the yote on my phone to show the wife and she said "Thats nice Dear, NO MORE GUNS!"

Well.....Me, being the devoted husband I am, I just had no other choice of action. I drove over to the local gun shop and bought a 22-250 Ultra Varmiter with the fluted bull barrel and Choate stock,....and some flowers,....and a box of candy. I had to go to the flower store for them. You know, Gun stores should sell flowers and candy as well as guns, sure would save me some time, and an extra stop, whenever I needed a new gun.

I topped this one with another Nikon Buckmaster in the 4.5X14X40 SF variety. Only took 14 shots to start getting good 1" groups at 150 yards. Again, this was with reloads of 50 gr Vmax over Hodgdon H4895. I took this gun out this morning to my hunting spot and called for 35 minutes. A yote finally showed up on my left side and upwind at about 40 yards. I let him pass me by and woofed him to a stop on my right side at 55 yards. Let me tell you, a 50 gr Vmax pill from a 22-250 at 55 yards equals to one very big saucer size hole in a 30 lb coyote!

PS...She's not mad at me anymore....But boy are you guys in trouble!!!!!!!!

Best Regards to All
Dale

Dale, Welcome to the tribe!

I can handle being in trouble with your wife... especially if it keeps her from being mad at you! ;D

And I love that idea of gun stores selling flowers and candy... or even just throwing them in for purchasers. Would help a lot of folks.

Luckily for me, my wife is also a shooter and goes to gunshows with me. In a way, that ain't necessarily such a good way to acquire more toys. Since she is kind and sweet about it, I kind keep my ownself in check. With my previous wife, who was not quite as openminded about toys, I often found ways to sneak them into the house and hide the purchases from her.

Truthfully though, I like this way better.  ;) ;) ;)

Congrats Dale!!! I think that's a great idea for a new mom and pop gun store, mom can sell the candy and flowers, dad can sell the guns!!!   :D

Great post, thanks and welcome to the NEF H&R forum!!

Just Kiddin about the wife being mad, both guns were under the tree for me this year from my wife. Ain't She Great!

I got hooked on the Handis by lurking here on the forum for awile and reading all the post about accuracy and less cost. I'm really enjoying the simple function of these fine rifles. I also have a 30-30 TC Contender pistol, a .357 TC Contender pistol  and a Rossi .243 youth rifle that my wife uses to deer hunt.

Since I got the Handis for Christimas I have put my .223 Stevens 210 in the safe and haven't looked back yet. It's a shooter but my Handis will out shoot it with ease. I was concerned about going from a bolt action rifle to a single shot while yote hunting as it could cost me a double if it ever presented itself. Here in West Texas with wide open CRP land I don't see many doubles on the yotes, so its not really an issue.

Welcome,

You will end up getting deeper and deeper until there is no return!  Good to hear you ended up with a couple of good shooters.

Best,

Wolfgang
