Welcome to GBO! What the man said, the 300WM isn't an option unless you load it light, might as well get an '06, or better yet, a 26" barreled 280 which will be on the heels of the 7mag.

With handloads you can get a 06 within 100fps of factory 300 Win vel , with alot less pressure.

Yes, close at least, but if you are a handloader it doesn't matter. In bolt actions with both loaded to maximum safe pressures, you will have a 250-300fps spread. If this matters, then you will have to get a different type of rifle.

Check out the Federal Ammo site. http://www.federalcartridge.com/ballistics/Ammo_Ballistics.aspx?id=267&firearm=1&bc=0.474&muzzvel=2880&bulletwgt=180
They have a top shelf 06 load that comes with in 160fps of there top shelf 300win load.http://www.federalcartridge.com/ballistics/Ammo_Search.aspx
Trust me you or the elk with not know the difference.
Except in less recoil.

This is the Hornady top shelf https://www.hornady.com/shop/?ps_session=6fc15a5aadd2ad212f6b736d76a81544&page=shop%2Fbrowse&category_id=3fd358901ec2b806cdbb152612e888c8
Its only 90fps less.

That's why I said what I said, with both loaded at the same pressures. My Sendero shoots 180's at 3,170fps. Try to get within 90fps of that or even 160fps of that with an '06 & you will have rifle parts all over your head which is alot worse than recoil. Your first comment was what '06 reloads could do compared to 300WM factory. Sooooo, I am keeping it apples to apples, or if you want to compare factory & reloads of both combined, the 250-300fps difference still stands because the fastest (esp. in the 300) will be the reloads, it is hard but not impossible to get
faster '06 reloads than the Hor. Lt. Mag.

I use and like a 30-06 alot & I also use a 30-06AI &  the previously mentioned 300WM. They all do great loaded to their full potential, but the 30-06
is NOT a 300mag.

Doesn't matter, a 300 should not be discussed on a Handi forum anyway.

SAJ - Welcome to Graybeards.
If your looking for a Magnum offering in a Handi, then only a few and traditional calibers fit the bill IMHO -and non belted.
I personally agree, the 280 is an excellent round, and if you are in doubt then just do some research. You might just be suprised on what you find. If you want to spend more $$ then perhaps a 280 Improved, or with a little more $$ doing a 26" 30-06 AI or Improved.
Magnums have their place, but too many use them when not necessary.

Unless your marksmanship skills far surpass those of mere mortals like me, a nice hot 180-ish grain 30-06 load will well and thoroughly kill an elk (or moose, or anything else on this continent) at any range you have any business shooting at one.    300-ish yards would be well within the accepted energy/velocity recommendations, and if you think you can do 400 yards under field conditions, fling a Hornady LightMag in the tube and let er fly.    (though, personally, I think even 200 yards is a LONG ways under field conditions...)

Here's my choice for long range Elk in a Handi....my 338-06 A-Square ;) The other would be Quickdtoo's 26"  35 RMEF Whelen... ;) ;)

With a good barrel...good cut rifling and superb handloads or top shelf factory loads...it would be the one to go for in a Handi...Both will give outstanding results...and the 338-06 ASquare is really really close to what you'll get with a 338 Mag...out of a barrel like mine or Quicks...my 180 grain Accubonds are clocking out at 3050fps...and I am 3 grains shy of the max book loads..In my rifle...they don't kick near as hard as the 200 grainers out of a 30-06...

BTW...I've own the original 300 WSM of controversy Handi barrel now...It didn't hold up to 3 factory loads and 100 mid range hand loads for the original owner...so...I really don't think a 300 WM would fair any better...

Sister's honor statement is not logical, as I told you I like both rounds & own both, therefore I have no emotional tie to either, I just like to see apples to apples comparison & your first post was anything but that! Maybe you should read your own posts. My fist post calmly pointed this out &
the fact that you just won't let it alone proves my point.
