Model 70 sporter varmint

My neighbor has a Model 70 sporter varmint barreled action that he will part with.  It is a short action 22-250 with a 22.5" heavy barrel.  I know nothing about this rifle.  Were they good, as far as being accurate? The barrel seems a little short by today's standards.  Any idea what the rate of twist would be?  Also if I buy it I need to get a stock.  Does anyone have any recommendations?  Preferably something that would be a "drop in" with no final fitment necessary.  Also am considering buying a new Savage heavy barrel; or I know of a Remington 220 Swift heavy barrel for 600 Canadian that has had the stock bedded and trigger worked over.
Any information or opinions welcomed.

Hey swamp, a good friend of mine just bought the same gun and he likes it alot, but i would personally try to buy a Ruger target.

I own a Model 70 stealth in 22-250. It has a longer heavy barrel and shoots 3 shot groups just under .5". The shorter barrel should not affect accuracy (muzzle velocity would be a bit slower).

I have a Ruger Mod. 77 MKII VT. Target Gray with the 2 stage trigger in .220 Swift. It is a tack driver just like all .220 Swifts. I have shot a .292 5 shot group at 100 yds in compitition with it. They don't call the .220 Swift the king of the laser guns for nothing. If you reload it is very easy to get any Swift to shoot as good as mine does.

I love my  Winchester 223 Heavy Varmint...It is in the HS Precision stock..and I highly recommend them..





The Savages are ok..but I'll take a Model 70 to them anytime..

I have a Model 70XTR Varmint in .243 win that with just a bedding job shoots consistant .3" groups. As for the stock I highly recommend the HS Percision varmint style with the aluminum bedding system.
