I am new to the 99 fraturnity having just bought a 99 in 300 Savage. I was wondering if anyone has made one in 7-08? Maybe rebore a 243 barrel to 7-08.

Some things are best left as is.
Next you would want to drill and tap the receiver for a scope

Someone already has...they drilled the reciever for a side mount even though the factory had drilled & tapped the top. Thats why it fell into my price range. And may be a candidate for a project, 358 Win or maybe 7-08. Though I'm sure the 300S is a great caliber. Got a couple boxes of it to ring out my new baby.

How old is it? If it was made after they lengthened the receiver it will work. The older ones are to short to handle the 7-08 or 358.

I also purchased a Savage 99 with holes in the receiver. I found a Pachmayr mount that the holes ligned up so I will also be mounting a scope on a 99 for the same reason as you

More experienced Savage folk have it dated as 1953 or 54. I would like to have a gun to hunt out west and not have a bolt. 308 or 7-08 would get me there (possibly handloading up the 300 also?)
Could a gunsmith easily open it up to 308? I see similar models came in 308, RII up to 1960.
Thanks

If it is a 53 or 54 it is the old style, the actions were modified for the 243,308 &358 in 55 or 56. I have 2 99 300's and 2 308 99's there realy isn't much diff. in the two. Pref. the 300's but 308 ammo is easier to find. Cost to have yours converted would prob. run as much as finding a shooter in 308.

Savage manufactured the Model 99 in 7mm/08.  This caliber, together with the Monte Carlo stock, was added to the Model 99-C (Clip magazine model) in 1981 and discontinued in 1984, so a Model 99 in 7mm/08 is rather rare, but they're out there if you look hard enough.

Look for that Monte Carlo stock... then look to see if it's in 7mm/08 caliber.  That's a .308 Winchester cartridge case necked down to .284 (or "7mm").  The 7mm/08 caliber is a slightly lower performer than the 100+ year old 7x57 Mauser when the 7x57 Mauser cartridge is loaded to its full potential, but the 7mm/08 is one of the growing "family" of modern cartridges using a necked down or necked up .308 Winchester case.

Incidentally, Savage added the .308 Winchester cartridge to the Models 99R, RS and EG in 1955... and the .243 and .358 calibers to the Models 99R, RS & EG in 1956... and to the Model F in 1959.   :)
