Springfield 1911 Mag release issue
« on: January 08, 2007, 02:53:24 AM »
I am the proud new owner of a Springfield 1911A1 Loaded. I am new to 1911's, but have been wanting one for some time. I expected the magazines to fall out when the release was pressed, but they do not. What should I do to free up the magazine release?

Thanks in advance for any advise.

The issue is, based on no information, probably not one of the release but with the mags.
Check the web for issues such as this and fixes.
Mags, out of the box have need of tuning and the tuning issues are based on what is going on.
Not all mags are made equal.
In games this issue is very critical.
S/D issues are not as critical, except for reliability, as not many S/D situations require a reload.

CDA:  if you completely depress the mag release and hold it and the mags do not drop free of their own accord, whether loaded or otherwise, get some new mags.  They are inexpensive enough.  I like the Chip McCormick 8 rounders.  I also like the Shooting Star magazines (8 rnds).  I would not fiddle with the mag release.  If she still hangs up the mags then you should have a gunsmith check it out.  HTH.  Mikey.

Thanks for the info. I have tried other magazines and they stick also. I am also going to look into the grip screws.

CDA,
I think you are on the right track. The problem is most likely in the gun it's self. First remove the grips and try the mags, if they now drop free, you've found your problem. Check for drag marks on the magazines,(long grip bushings or screws)  if there are none, remove the mag catch, and see how freely your mags slide in and out of the pistol. If they move freely with the mag catch removed, replace it.

Thanks for the help. I removed the grips and had the same problem. I then tried those mags in another Llama 1911. They all released fine. I spoke with SA Customer Service today and they are sending me a replacement mag. to try. If it doesn't work they said they would need to see the frame.

I thought that any 1911 mag would work in any pistol, but it seems there are some slight differences.

CDA:  The magazines are all supposed to be interchangeable.  Sometimes you find mags that are just not a good fit - so can them and get some new ones, they don't cost that much.  I've got a bunch of mags for my 45s and finally managed to toss an old one I had for almost 30 yrs, just last month - dang thing never fit right and would always hang up on the 6th round - never could straighten that one out and it just wasn't worth the effort to mess with it.   However, lots of us are frugal types, so..............

But on top of all that, you've got a new gun - you just gotta wring that baby out.  You've got a loaded 1911A1 there buddy, ya ought shoot the snot out of it and then see how she is.  Go shoot up a couple of hundred rounds of good ball ammo and get to know that Springer.  Get yourself a handfull of extra mags before ya do and have a ball.  Mikey.

Strange. If loaded the spring in my Springfield mag willl kick the mag 1/2" up in the air with the weapon turned up side down.

That's what I want. In talking with the CS at Springfield, I think they will take care of the issue. I will just have to wait and see.

Mikey: I love to shoot this gun, the best shooting 1911 I have ever shot. It is just a little aggravating to have to pull the mags each time. I do plan on shooting this pistol a lot ;).
