375 SM
« on: January 08, 2007, 05:03:20 PM »
I have a chance to buy one of these in 375SM for $350. I know absolutely nothing about this gun and wonder if I should pick it up.

It is at a flea market in SE Ohio. So far,I can't find a source for ammo. I'll be going back up there Friday,I'll look it over again then.

It is chambered for the 357 SuperMag cartridge.  It will also accept the 357 Maximum or 357 magnum in the same manner that a 357 magnum will accept a 38 Special.  The 357 Maximum can occasionally be found on the shelves.

The 357 SuperMag is a wild cat and a hand loading proposition.  The OAL is longer than the 357 Maximum but the case length is only 0.005 longer so you can generally use 357 Maximum brass by just setting the trim length 0.005 longer.  I have been buying Winchester 357 Maximum brass and find it's 0.005 over length out of the box.  Star Line makes 357 Maximum brass.

You will find the revolver marked 357 Maximum in spite of actually being chambered for the 357 SuperMag.  I suspect DW marked it so to indicate commercial loads were available.   A 357 SuperMag cartridge with a heavy bullet will generally not chamber in a revolver that is a true 357 Maximum such as the Ruger Blackhawk.

For $350 in good shape I'll take two.

It has to be trimmed from .375 Winchester brass. Good luck finding that! Some say you can blow out .30-30 Winchester cases, then trim them down, but then others say the brass will be too thin to be safe. It is not a straight-wall case. You will likely need to order a custom die set.

I was very fortunate because my seller also had some loaded commercial ammo for sale. It was made by a company called Bullseye Ammunition.

If it needs a new barrel or a cylinder, then I hope you know a good machinist.

damascusblade5- I make my .375 brass from 30-30-much cheaper than .375 Winchester brass, depending on how hot I load, lasts at least 5 reloads. If you want to PM me, I can give you more info. gypsyman@bex.net

I don't reload so I would have no way of getting ammo. I saw one of these guns on Gunbroker last month and he wanted $925 for it,think I may buy this one just to resell in a few years.
