Surplus M2 Ball
« on: January 09, 2007, 09:29:57 AM »
My brother was digging thru his ammo and has some surplus M2 Ball (30-06) that is corrosive.  I was think about using it along with some good LC M2 ball for hunting.  My question is:  being FMJ it  probably will not expand on thin skinned animals.  Would it be okay to file or grind the tips off to expose the core....kinda a cheap hollow point.  Is this safe ?  Anyone ever tried it ?  If so, does it work ?  I would sure appreciate any comments.

Thank ya'll,

jumbeaux

As said, it has been done and some have "paid" a bunch.

The front of a military jacket is quite thick and you won't get much expansion anyway. File a groove down the side and look at jacket thickness.

BUT what can happen, with both ends open... hole at the base and a hole at the front... load may blow the core out of the jacket leaving the jacket in the barrel. Next shot rings the barrel. As a rule the shooter does not get hurt, but the barrel is junk. It may or may not be visible, but usually you can feel it. Accuracy goes down. Value of the gun drops. A box of hunting ammo with soft points is a whole lot cheaper. ALOT. luck.

If you mix it with non crosive ammo it will still be crosive. If you have a gun with an old barrel that is on it`s last leg go for it, but if your not wanting to shorten a good barrels live I would get rid of the stuff. I never recomand hunting with mil. ball ammo anyway, it has to great of tendinsy to rickochet.

I don't know if it is so called legal, but I have shot woodchucks, muskrats and racoons with fmj and it really comes out how it went in.  I just sort of zips a whole right through them.  I have only shot at things with a big natural backdrop or at muskrats in my pond at a good downward angle.  I sure wouldn't suggest shooting them in any type of open ground.  Keep in mind it was .223 I was shooting let alone 30-06.

Had a bunch of surplus 30-06 ammo that I wanted the cases from - pulled all the FMJ (it may have been armor piercing too!) and salvaged the cases - the bullets made excellent projectiles for my wrist rocket slingshot  ;D
