Shooting Shorts
« on: January 09, 2007, 11:44:11 AM »
Does anyone have a rifle that shoots shorts well?  If so what is it?

I have a single shot Savage that does very well, but I want a repeater for hunting squirrels.

The problem is most new rifles are chambered in .22LR (or all three short, long, long rifle), for that matter...
So the shorts don't chamber quite deep enough to engage the rifling...so accuracy suffers.

Can I ask why you're set on using shorts?
If noise is an issue, why not just use some quality subsonics or similar?

From what I've seen, quality subsonics are usually a bit cheaper than most shorts...and shorts are somewhat difficult to find.

Thanks for your reply bscman.  At home I use CCI HP Shorts for pests with great results.  They are not only quiet, but the CCI HP's really flatten-out after hitting a target.  Even though it is safe to shoot on my property, I try to avoid ricochets.  As I mentioned earlier, my Savage Mark I single-shot shoots them very well.  Often times .5" or better at 50 yrds.  Single-shots are very awkward in the field, however. Especially when trying to load in the cold or when wearing gloves.

I think their also sort of nostalgic, being America's first cartridge.

Might wanna try Aguila Super Colibris...shooting around 500fps, they are great and VERY quiet for backyard pest control.
Another option is CCI's CB Longs...offer better accuracy that the shorts, 710fps, and very quiet.  Out of my rifles, the noise from impact or the firing pin is louder than the rounds' report. Seem accurate enough for pest control inside 40 yards or so.

I have an old H&R 865 Plainsman bolt action that shoots CCI CB's pretty well. It has a 5 round mag that feeds shorts like nobody's business. 22 inch long barrel helps keep it quiet.
Got a Henry lever action that my son shoots. It works pretty good with shorts too. It has a shorter barrel so the noise is a little louder.
We shoot airguns in the back yard mostly, but have on occasion use the powder burners loaded with CB's. Got an air rifle that makes more noise than the Plainsman!  ;D

A Marlin Glenfield model 20.
Mine shoots them great. I understand you using them because
of their accuracy. They shoot better out of this gun than anything
else I have tried and are plenty for any squirrel. I have another gun that
I use longs in for the same reason, They are just more accurate in that
particular gun. Longs are getting hard to get, most places no longer carry them.
They are worth the effort to find though for me, I am 95% sure that each one
I fire will bring home a squirrel or rabbit. (and many other edibles that I won't mention)
I have a model 62 pump that is the best Bullfrog getter in the world with .22 shorts.

I have an older Marlin 39A that shoots shorts well enough that I hunt squirrels with it. I shoot the aguila match shorts in it with good results.

I have to scope everything. I can't see open sights anymore.

My .22's are about half and half scoped or not scoped.
Guess it just kinda depends on the quality of the iron sights, and how accurate the rifle is.

My HMR and WMR's have scopes though, to take better advantage of the longer range.

My favorite shootings is a Norinco JW-15 (BRNO Replica) that I got for cheap, that is suprisingly accurate, with great (adjustabe for distance) iron sights. Makes a great truck gun/barn gun.

Same as above, it depends on the open sights that are on it.
I have several that are scoped though.

My Remington 541-T wears a Leupold Compact VX-II 3x9x33

For years my Remington 552 wore a Weaver 1.5-4.5 scope, it got to where it wouldn't hold zero..I sent it off to a place in Texas 10 years or so ago...They said it was fixed, but it was no better...So now I just use it with open sights and take the 541 when the leaves drop off the trees.
