Simmons silhouette scopes?
« on: January 10, 2007, 03:43:12 AM »
About 20 years ago Simmons marketed a line of scopes which were specialized for Metallic Silhouette rifle competition.  If memory serves, these were offered in 12x, 15x, and 24x.  Does anyone have experience with these scopes?  Thanks.

I had one for awhile.  It sold for around $100 new and was kind of a cloudy piece of glass.  I didn't have it long enough to tell you how well it tracked.

I had a Simmons "silhouette" model, a 6.5x20 with AO, target knobs and a ram engraved on the side. It was the worst scope I have ever owned. After a few months the target turrets became inoperable.

I have a Tasco 36x, a few BSAs, three Weaver T series, a Premier Reticles Leupold 18x40, Premier Reticles Leupold 6.5x20, Bushnell 8x32 4200 on different airgun, rimfire, and highpower silhouette rifles so I have a bit of experience with various scopes. I would say run, don't walk from a Simmons.

I passed on that Simmons scope and judging from the feedback I recieved, that was the right decision.

I am curious as to your user name, "40inarow."  Have you ever shot a perfect 40?  I've seen several people shoot into the high 30's, but never a perfect Metallic Silhouette score of 40/40.  I hear it has been done a handful of times, though.

Not yet !  I managed a couple on 40s in my back yard range with my air gun, but never in a match. The "40inarow" is still a goal, and to call it elusive would be the understatment of the year.

The closest I have come to a 40 was to be privileged to witness Cathy Winstead shoot a 40 in Austin at the Texas State match awhile back. It was a beautiful thing.

I attribute the "40inarow" name to positive thinking !

Cathy Winstead comes to the St. Louis Benchrest club matches.  She is a joy to watch.  Ray Schnarre, who has won the World Championship a couple of times, made the following comment: "When Cathy shows up, you're just competing for second place!"  Ray said that with a smille and meant it as a compliment.
