376 Steyr?
« on: January 10, 2007, 08:44:48 AM »
Just purchased a LH Charles Daly Mauser action and need to decide what to build out of it.  I really like the 376 Steyr as it doesn't pack quite the recoil of the 375 H&H.  This looks like a great cartridge that just isn't catching on.  Brass and a set of dies would keep the cartridge running for me the rest of my life.  I tore the rotory cup in my should several years ago in a fall down hill while hunting and can't take the recoil anymore.  I would like to have something in the 375 dia. and could also have it Magna-Ported.  I think my shoulder could handle the 376 Steyr even if I had to load it down a bit.  What are your thoughts or advise on this?  Thanks

If recoil is a problem I think I would look at a .338-06 or a .35 Whelen or even a .338 Fedral if its a short action.  Plent of the right stuff for most needs, easy to download, no problem getting brass.  And come time to sell, they are both fairly popular.

I have 338-06 that uses 225 Speer GS's at 2620 fps.  I'm looking for something just a little bigger and I've always liked the 375 H&H.  I had a Model 70 Alaskian 375 H&H back in 1965.  Wish I still had it!!!

Why not chamber it in the .375 Ruger or Dakota?  You can always download to .376 Steyr velocities.

The Charles Daly Mauser action is made for the 30-06 parent case and feed the 376 Steyr case fine and the other case would require much modification to properlly feed.

The 9.3x62 mauser is the easiest conversion to a cartridge with real power. It's also got good availability.

Syncerrus ---- I want to thank you.  I beleive you've come up with what I was looking for.  I,ve spent the last two hours on the web and going through loading manuals.  This looks better than the 376 Steyr and plus its been around for 102 years and I really didn't know it existed.  Brass is made by Norma (rather pricey, but okay).  Dies from RCBS at around $30.00.  This will fit my Charles Daly action without any modification and performance is right between my 338-06 and the 375 H&H.  I can live with this one.  Thanks again.

I just built a M 48 mauser chambered in .376 steyr what a sweet rifle . A friend of mine has a .338 and he said the recoil isn't alot more in his opinon. It certainly shoots well I hope to get drawn for an Elk tag to try it on.

Hi there,

anymore fans of the .376 Steyr out there? Did anyone had an Mauser 98 action chambered for this? By the way: The cartrige design is based on the 9,3x64 Brenneke.

If it is a question of recoil but need a powerfull cartridge, remember
the weight of the bullet and weight of powder charge add to recoil.
A 250gr bullet can be had in .338 fed, .358 win, 9.3x62mm and I would
stay away from magnum cases. With the action you have something
in a "06" size case using a faster burning powder down loaded will work.

Question about your rotator cuff tear.  Have you had it repaired?  I had a full thickness tear once on a tendon on my right cuff, and the same thing twice on the left side.  It is painful isn't it?  I no longer enjoy shooting magnums and prefer 308 and 7mm-08 for whitetails.  My 270 and 280AI  are OK just unnecessary.  I learned to shoot my scoped Contender left handed from a bean bag after the furst surgery (right side) and still shoot this way.
If you haven't had the surgery yet, and its on your shooting side, you need to stop shooting and get it fixed.  You'll be OK by hunting season, but you'll never be completely well.  Been there, done that, three times now.  Got a bad knee now.  Hell to get old.

I've been shooting the .376 steyr in a Steyr pro-hunter with a 20" barrel now for almost 6 years. Have dies and 250 pcs. of brass so I should be fine.
I've used it only for whitetails in thick brush with the hornady 225 gr. sp interlock. I'm shooting a reduced load of IMR 4895 which send the 225 gr. at 2400fps more or less. accuracy is reasonable, 1" to 1 1/2" at 100 yds. In the light pro hunter, it's not exactly a gun I want to spend a whole lot of time on the bench with. In a heavier gun it would be alot more pleasent, but would defeat my purpose for the gun, long hikes in steep terrain and shots under 100yds in thick brush.   With the reduced loads, there is less meat damage than a .30-06 with 150gr. Noslers and when hit, they go straight down. I've not had a deer run more than 10 yds.    For my purpose, I think it's ideal. Short, light gun, big heavy bullet, leupold 2.5-8X in talley qd rings with great open sights if needed. I love the featurs of the steyr too. Removable spacers in the butt to adjust length of pull depending on how many layers you're wearing, great open sights, you can click the magazine in just below where they feed, nice 4 position safety.    I could do the same thing with alot of other cartridges though, .350 rem. mag., 358 win., .35 whelen, etc... come to mind, but for me it's an ideal total package of rifle design and features + cartridge/ballistics.  If I ever have the need, I can also move up to the full house .300 gr. loads and kill most creatures that walk this planet, anything that walks North America.

If anyone has some reloading info they'd like to share, I'd be happy to share the loads I've came up with for the .225 gr. bullets.
