 can you convert a 45 acp 1911 into a 38 super and if so how

Very easily.  First, obtain a complete upper (slide, barrel, etc., - one that is already to go).  Second, you need to file/sand/work down the very top of the ejector to get the slide to fit.  I have done this a couple of times and it works well.

I have used Colt pre-series 70 parts and they interchange with other pre-series 70s parts;  I have used series 70 parts and they interchange with other series 70 parts (i.e., series 70 45 1911 frames will accept series 70 38 Super slides - once the ejector is worked down).  I have also used Colt series 70 slides on my Springfield 1911 45 frame in both 38 Super and 45.

If you are using an aftermarket 38 Super slide you may need to work the rails down a bit to get it to fit the frame.  HTH.  Mikey.

When I swapped calibers, I replaced the ejector with a 38 (super) auto ejector, it's easily enough done, as there is a 1/16 dia cross pin retaining it.

You can also get a 9mm slide, recoil spring and barrel and convert to that as well.  The 38 auto ejector will work with the 9mm, but the 9mm ejector nose must be shortened a bit for the 38 auto or it will contact the extracting brass too soon..  The 38 auto magazine will feed 9mm, but the 9mm magazine has a spacer in it and won't accept 38 super ammo.

With a slide, recoil spring and barrel and magazine you could also convert to 40 S&W.
