NEF Handi 500S&W Throat Length
« on: January 12, 2007, 08:08:08 AM »
Anyone out there with an NEF 500S&W know how long the throat of the chamber is?  In other words, can I load one of those enormous 700gr hardcast bullets in the rifle?  I know they chamber in the revolver, just wondering if they fit in the rifle.  Any help would be great!!

Mine's not too bad, COL for the .900" long 440gr Cast Performance would be 2.28" to the lands, that only leaves the bullet seated .230" in the case. I have some 500gr custom bullets that are 1.05" long, to the lands, they're seated to the cannelure .450" deep, so I'd say 700gr bullets, unless they're bore riders, will take up a lot of powder room.

Of course, you could have the throat reamed to allow full powder capacity with less pressure, have done that with my .45-70s.

Nice site.  I've been looking for some reasonably priced factory ammo so I can see if I like this caliber before investing in reloading supplies for it.  Seems to be just what I was looking for.
