varmint hunting in TX..... info please.
« on: May 01, 2003, 08:29:10 PM »
Howdy all,

been getting interested in possibly trying out my shooting skills on something other than a piece of paper or steel.   and seeing as i have no curent desire or need to hunt for any food animal. and i REFUSE to "trophy hunt".  it seems that Varminting is what is left and it apeals to me on it's own right anyway (pest-animal control is always good).

having grown up in an area of NC where "varmint hunting" wasn't exactly well known (beyond shooting crows) and in fact was frowned upon even by many who would have benefited.  I don't really know much about this arm of the shooting sports.

so if you good gentlemen could be so kind...   what advice/information can you give me about varminting in general and in the lovely state of Texas in specific??

any and all input welcomed, and appreciated.

Detritus:  I cant speak for the gentalmen in Tx. but the varmit season (coyote) is closed here in Ar. at the present time, most are turkey hunting at this time or in my case getting the pastures ready and getting ready for some lake time on the boat, you might contact the game and fish dept. in Tx. and get the local laws and regulations for the type of varmit you plan on going after, some states have a caliber restriction, we were limited to .25 or smaller 2 years ago and then they raised it to .30 cal so alot of the men and (ladies) are using their regular deer rifles to do double time, hope this has helped some and good luck. :D   JIM

Since you asked.......maybe it is your holier than thou attitude towards hunting in general and trophy hunting in particular. You sound more like a supporter of PETA than a hunter. Maybe you are just a troll trying to stir something up??

You asked.........

Bob,

Don't know exactly where the "Holier than thou" thing came from, i was expressing my personal feelings.  maybe this will help clarify.

to make this VERY direct and understandable......

I have no problem with Food hunting, Dove, Deer, and Raccoon have all graced tables as a result of my efforts (coon BB-Q is some of the best). I just do not currently find a need or desire to do so.

Trophy Hunting, which to clarify I define as hunting for the sole purpose of getting a "bigger, prettier, more exotic, etc" head or full body to mount on the wall or in one's den/home etc.  is something that I as an individual DO find rather distasteful, of course i say the same about Broccoli!! i just don't like it.  If someone else wants to do so that's fine, just don't expect me to go along.  I don't beleive that the size, quality, or quantity of the animal heads mounted on my wall makes me in any way a better hunter, or a better person.

my criteria for when i'll pick up a gun and shoot an animal, are..

do i need the meat?

Is the animal in distress (maimed hit-by-car dogs/cats etc)

does the hunting and killing of this critter serve a pest control or other public service function (dispatching of rabid dogs etc).

I'm not a plant from PETA, i am against unessesary cruelty to animals (meaning if and when i DO hunt, i make sure that i have a more than reasonable chance of a clean kill) as in torture for tortre's sake is out, but if hooking a monkey to a car battery will cure AIDS "here's the positive lead!!".  i also beleive that humans are the top of the food chain. i just don't see that as a reason to be barbaric toward the critters lower down.

lastly Accusing someone of being a Troll or Peta member b/c they differ from your particular outlook on hunting, is NOT condusive to the free exchange of information and Ideas that, it was my understanding that these boards were set up to allow.

agree disagree, doesn't matter, you're free to think what you will and so am i.  but DON'T accuse someone of being "anti-hunter"etc,  just b/c they are selective in when and what they choose to hunt.  it's divisive and we don't need that.

Geez Bob, lighten up a bit.  It's not like he came in and slammed certain kinds of hunting or is promoting gun control - just stating his preference.
Hunters & shooters need to stick together, since our rights are dwindling.   Right now, I don't have an interest in going on a hunt for bear or moose, but could change with time.  I don't expect to influence anyone that wants to go after either, just because it's not on my list.   I'm much more inclined to varmint hunt.  Of course, I have started to consider the whitetails in our area as varmints.

Detritus - the biggest obstacle in Texas is the fact that the vast majority of land is private.  You either need to know someone or lease a place.  There is public land, but I don't know the restrictions for non-residents' access to it.

The state in general has a big population of coyotes, rabbits, crows, prairie dogs, etc.

Hey Dwayne,

Read his post again......sounds like slamming and looking down his nose at other hunters to me. Those quote marks around trophy hunting are pretty emphatic. This is typical of the "my kind of hunting is better than yours" attitude. I am not the one splitting the ranks here.

You go hunt with him. :D

Bob,
I got that the first time I read his post.  My mistake singling you out at first.  The latter part of my about all hunters & shooters sticking together was my main point.  I'm not a big trophy hunter, but by George, if I'm on a meat hunt and muy grande makes an appearance, I'll clear a space on my wall.  Don't take offense to my post, we Texans gotta stick together, too.
