Mike -

The realities of life include those things we can do something about and those things we can't.  Which is whiich we don't know.  You're now facing the issues we put off as long as we can, occasionally interupted with reality-checks.

One day at a time.  Savor life - it's good.

Keep us posted - most all of us pray - because of Who we pray to and who we are.

We will pray for you but be sure you get a consult from the best hem-onc doc you can find.  Two consults does not hurt.  Are you near a university?

Much thanks to each and every one of you for your appreciated support.
I am 61 years old so I am not bitter about this as I am not a young man. I will miss not watching all my grandchildren grow up though.
Greybeard, thanks for posting about the diet, I had a friend that just mentioned it. I am going to check out Rickks Link and read up on it.
Double D an CW......thanks.
copdoc, thanks for the advise, appreciate it. Yes, we have a university in Tucson, and I went to Tucson Medical Center as I was advised they probably were the best in the state for knowledge about this rare disease. I was happy with my surgeon. I have pretty much decided against any chemotherapy treatment as it doesn't seem to have much effect on this cancer so hate to spend what time there is left being sick all the time.
Thanks again everybody, much appreciated!!
Michael

Mike, Doctor Douglas here!  As part of your therapy to get you on the road to recovery you need make a post here on the board every day.  No matter how bad you feel, make yourself do it.  Post a message to us, make a reply, say something let us know you are still in there fighting this thing. One post a day whether you need to or not.

Here's my good news.  Went to the Dr. today a follow-up for sinus infection and dry mouth.  He took blood last week and checked it for diabetes and prostrate disease.  He was concerned becasue I was taking two medications for prostrate and dry mouth is symptom of diabetes. Results no diabtes infact readings well down in normal range.  PSA was so low that he said he would not normally prescribe medicine.  He took me off one prostrate med (he couldn't understand why I was taking two that do the same thing)  and we we will monitor symptoms, then in a few weeks we'll start cutting back on the second and see what happens.

He wasn't familair with prilosec, untill my wife said nexium.  He told me that they don't prescribe that in South Africa any more because of all the side effects especially dry mouth.  So he took me off that.

Just got back from the Doc's office with my 32 year old Son. He has an IQ of 74, autistic, social anxiety, weighs 400 lbs and today found out he is diabetic. We have six kids, all but one are totally disabled and have major brain disorders.  Five of the six are drawing full Social Security benefits.

The Wife and I are "full time baby sitters".  How do you deal with it? You just do.

I guess we play with the cards we are delt and the Wife and I have done a pretty good job.

Thanks Tim;

I guess I don't think much about it 'till  a topic such as this comes up.

The good news is I beat colon cancer last year. The other good news was the completion of bedroom number seven last Summer.

We just press on.

Thanks Dr. Douglas and CW, also EL Cazador 66. I don't imagine it would hurt anything to post every day that I can. Glad your doctor visit went well! You will never know how much we take that for granted until the day we visit the doctor and he says there is nothing I can do.
I haven't spent a day in my shop for five weeks and this is very tough. I work full time in my shop and love being out there. Hope to get strong enough again to get out there and maybe build a cannon.

There  your first treatment. Great.  Now you have a goal, you gotta cannon to build, so get busy. A great family heirloom to pass on.  That way one of your great great great grandkids can post a picture on GBO 2100 and my great great great grand kid can tell them to get a copy of the "Way Beyond More Complete Cannoeer" for information on shooting.  Be sure and mark the gun with maker name date and calibar.

Well, it's been 6 months now since this was started.

I'm down to 205 lbs after losing 45lbs over ~6 1/2 months. I made some permanent changes in eating and lifestyle that are now second nature. I feel 200% better! Good thing since I've been traveling every month now with my job out to remote sites that require lots of walking/hiking in rough conditions! My goal now is to get down to 185, then to start back in lifting and start putting lean muscle mass back on.

You don't realize how much volume 45 lbs of blubber is until you have to take off a belt at the airport and your slacks fall down to your knees in the security line!:)

Anyone else have any updates?

THAT'S GREAT,  Don!

Christmas I was over 275, now I'm at 241.  Aiming at about 220, but the doc says 205; I'd like a little reserve.

Still walking (now a little more than 2 miles a day at 3.5mph) 4-5 times a week.  3 times didn't quite do it.

Blood pressure averaging 107/68 first thing in the AM.  Lunch time I still go over to Hank's for a burger and fries.

I wish you fellows the best with your health. We young pups need your wisdom and wit, so please take care of yourselves. I'm 37 and don't have to many problems yet but I'm about 30 pounds heavy in the gut. When I was younger I could eat all I wanted and never pack it on. Times change, I try to cut back on bad eating habits, and I don't seem to be gaining any more but it sure doesn't want to come off either . Lately I have been walking on my 40 minute lunch break at work, and to my surprise I feel pretty darn good after my walk. Take care Tracy

Hah..I'm not exactly an ancient wise one, as I'm only 38! :D

I come from a long line of diabetics, high blood pressure, etc. The more I can do now, the less restraints I'll be under later. A couple Thanksgivings with a room full of diabetics doing the cooking will convince anybody they want to stay healthy! ;D

I started with the Atkins diet for about five weeks and lost about 15 lbs. Then I went back to eating things I like, but in smaller portions and at *normal* times. Add to that about 3-4 hrs of exercise per week and that's pretty much it. I'm still losing about 1-2 lbs every week or so...not including the 10 lbs I drop in an afternoon due to water loss when building cannons in the shop here in TX!
