Javelina with a .45 auto
« on: January 12, 2007, 01:37:14 PM »
Here is a photo of a javelina I took with a .45 auto.  We were on a do-it-yourself public land hunt and all of us scored.  My brother and I, who are avid competition shooters, used 1911s with cast 200 grain wad cutters.  The other two fellows had .357 magnums with 158 grain jacketed hollowpoints.  In all cases the bullets zipped right through the pigs without much expansion.  My javelina was taken at 55 paces with one well placed shot.  Enjoy the photo!

I have played the Bullseye game and IMO it is the hardest game there is.  I've also piddled with Combat Pistol (forerunner to IPSC), Pin shooting, Action Pistol and IDPA.  However, Metallic Silhouette is my favorite and I have been playing that game since 1985.

The best parts of the javelina was made into shisk-e-bobs and fajitas.  They were delicious.  The remainder I made into summer sausage and it tastes good, too.

We were hunting in the Tortilita mountains, which are about 30 miles north of Tuscon, AZ.  Arizona has what they call a HAM license for javelina.  HAM stands for Handgun, Archery, or Muzzleloader and one is restricted to those types of arms.  Javelina is a great hunt for the handgunner.  The pigs do not see very well, although they do have excellent senses of smell and hearing.  The hunting technique used is to walk and glass until the pigs, usually in herds, are located.  Then you put in a stalk using the terrain and wind to your advantage.  The season is in February, there is plenty of public land, the weather is mild, and the pigs are active all day (no need to get up early) - I urge those reading this to give it a try!

Sounds like you guys had a great handgun hunting trip, CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I've got a Colt Gold Cup that I've been wanting to take hunting, and Javelina is exactly what I had in mind.  A friend of mine lives in Arizona and we are going to apply for tags for the end of 2007 / begining of 2008.  I was torn between a fast 200 grn SWC or 230 grn JHP load, after hearing of your success, I think I'll use the 200 SWC load - I've got lots of them loaded for plenty of practice between now & then.

Good job........thanks for sharing a picture and a bit about your hunt!!

I LOVE TO HUNT!
