House breaking problems
« on: January 12, 2007, 02:50:38 PM »
Our 16 week old mountain cur just cannot catch on to peeing & pooping outside.  She pees about every 1/2 hour.  She will go when we take her outside and then do it again inside less than 20 minutes later.  She sleeps in her crate for about 4 hours each night without peeing.  We take her out as soon as she gets up.  We'ved tried about everything, but sure open to suggestions.

You pretty much answered your own question. She never pees in her own crate. Most dogs won't except the ones we call "dirty dogs". Put her in her crate and keep her there until she askes to go out. She will and then get her right out. Play with her a bit, take her in the house and vist with her a bit then put her back in the crate. she stays there until she asks to go out, again she will. Right outside and same routine. Put her in her crate every night all night and out first thing in the morning. Two or three days and you should have a house broke dog. Remember, she doesn't mess her own nest!

I agree with Don.  Keep her in the crate, when she does go praise her, pet heer and make her know you approve.  If the dog has an accident, nevewr whip it, rub it's nose in it, just scold the dog and put in the crate immediately.  It may take a while but she will get the message.

I laugh at some people when they talk about housebreaking an animal.  One guy I use to work with could not understand why his dog messed on the floor every day.  I ask him if the dog was crated, no! I ask him if someone was there to let the dog out when it needed to go, no!  The guy left home at 6am to go to work, his wife and kids left at 7:30 for school and her work, no one returned home untill 6PM, and he wondered why the dog messed on the floor.  Heck, had he left me penned up for 12 hours, and no other place to go, Then I would have likely messed on the floor too.

The point is, dogs are like kids, you can't expect them to learn if no one is there to correct, or train them.
