405 Rems for 45-70

A friend of mine just got some 405 Rem. bullets off a guy. I was wondering what  you can get out of a 405 bullet reloading in SB2 45-70.Real guns shows from 1905 to 1998 in velocity.Dave

I've got a batch loaded up from 50gr to 55gr H4895, but haven't been to the range to shoot em yet. I bought 500 of the 405gr rems about a year ago when Cabelas had em for $71 shipped, they make great plinkers in the .45-120!!! ;D

I've got a bunch of them myself, I think I'll use them for plinking. I read a couple of posts on the reloading forum that claimed that these bullets preformed best at lower velocities. The statement was that at velocties over 1500fps they start to shed weight real fast.
I have no personal experience shooting game with these bullets, but I am trying to come up with a load/bullet combo to hunt bears with this spring. Based on the info that I've gotten 405 Rems are off the list.

The biggest thing we'll be shooting is deer. It will mostly be for targets like cement blocks :D.Between Macs load and the 405s it should be a fun time shooting ;).Thanks for the info guys.Dave

I think if big bears were on my live critter menu, one of the gas checked hard cast bullets like the 405gr Cast Performance would move to the short list of bullets I would work with, I've shot it, the 440gr CP, 460gr CP and the 525gr BTB Piledriver, all shoot very well.

Thanks Tim, I'll check them out. Right now I'm leaning towards 350gr Honady FN @ about 1850fps with H4198. It's been an extremely accurate load and the recoil is within reason. I'd like to try the 400gr A-Frames, but they don't fit into the budget ($60.00 for 50) right now. I've still got 3 or 4 months to figger it out  ;).

I shoot a lot of the 405gr rem JSP.  THey shoot great and I easily get them to 1925fps out of my guide gun.  I wouldn't think twice about using them on blackbear, deer, or hogs.  For brown bear and moose I like the kodiak bonded 405gr JSP.  I use the same load with both bullets and they will hit to same poi.   I have about 2 thousand of the 405gr Remmies.  I picked them up on sale and use them for all my plinking.
