RCBS Pro-Melt Furnace - Worth the money?
« on: May 02, 2003, 01:58:03 PM »
I see RCBS Pro-melt furnaces for sale on ebay every once in a while. The sellers state that they can be sent back to RCBS for a free rebuild. Has anyone out there actually done that? It seems too good to be true for something like a lead melting furnace.

I have a Lee 20 pound, bottom pour pot which is driving me crazy with leaking and a relatively inconsistent thermostat. It sounds like the RCBS Pro-Melt is better than the Lee in keeping a consistent temperature.

Thanks for any advice on getting the RCBS furnace.  Jon

I have a Pro Melt that was manufactured in Sept 1986. Bought this last year. It quit working so I sent it back and they not only fixed the heating element but replaced pot and spout all FREE! The best furnace on the market I have 2.

Shootingamigo,

I'm glad to hear it is true that RCBS fixes the Pro-Melt furnaces for free. I will buy one as soon as I can find a used one at a reasonable price.  Jon

Turbo, don't toss the Lee.  It may be giving you problems but will be great for preheating lead to transfer to the RCBS.  Using this technique will result in less variances in your bullets and less time waiting for the RCBS to come up to temperature due to adding cold lead.  I have an RCBS and love it, and will be purchasing a Lee pot for preheating.

TexasMac,

Great idea of using the Lee pot to pre-heat lead for the RCBS pot. Do you mount it above and slightly toward the back of the RCBS pot? How do you mount it, on a plywood stand?  Jon

Turbo, I don't plan on complicating the setup.  Will just use a dipper/ladle to transfer lead from the Lee to the RCBS.  Even a standard kitchen ladle will work, the kind used to ladle soup for example.

I bought an RCBS about ten years ago to replace a Lyman. I have been very pleased with it, and cast thousands of bullets. It looks well used, but still functions perfectly. It's well  worth the money.
