Finally
« on: January 16, 2007, 03:40:48 PM »
After searching for some land to hunt for 3 years, I finally found a spot where I could get around on my cane. Went over yesterday and just before dark a 135 pound boar walked out in front of me at 45 yards. I hit him just above the eyes from the right and it exited on the left, leaving massive damage. He dropped like a rock. Hand loads in a 30-30 Marlin with a 170 gr Hornady RN and H4350 powder.

Congratulations on the successful culmination of 3-years of research.  Would like to converse with you more regarding that handload.  I liike 170 gr. bullets in 30-30 caliber for hogs; little short range carbines that are quick and accurate, massive energy transfer, large exit hole, typically anchors them (depending on shot placement).  I also have a Marlin Model 336.  It doesn't like me and that feeling is mutual but my kids love it and it loves them.  These are discussions for the Handloading and Marlin Boards on 'GB'Outdoors.  Bon Appetite'.

Good shot! I think almost anything put "just above the eyes" will put one down for keeps. Sure cuts down on tracking time.

Tasty

Turns out that boar was tender and tasty. I gave quite a bit of it away for lack of freezer space and everyone cooked it a different way. And they were all happy. That's one hog that certainly wasn't wasted. Yummy....  ;D
