with a 1/8 twist you can easily shoot up to 77 gr bullets, the 80 gr's you'll likely need a faster twist.

Well I have the Tikka varmint barrel, still 1:8 but almost 24" length. Heaviest I've shot have been 75gr target rounds and they were fine. In my other 223 with 1:9 twist, not too good!
Whether 80gr is too much, I don't really know. Why would you want such a heavy bullet in a 223 would be my question?

Yep, right on target!

I have a very good RRA Varmiter with the 1-8 twist & it is a great performer. It loves the 60V-MAx, 75Hor. OTM & 77 Sierra.

I have a 1 in 8 twist in my .22 - 6mm and it`s a real tack driver with 80 gr MK bullets, but I`m pushing them alittle over 3,500 fps. On a warm summer day you might be able to shoot 80`s in an 8 twist .223, b ut you`ld probibly be better sticking with the 75`s.

Catfish,
Have you tried the 75 gr. Scirroco?  What is your trajectory out to 400 yds?
Thanks,
KR

This is not for you Walks with a gimp, because you remembered, but I'm sure that there are a few that may have forgotten what each barrel twist means to a bullet.

1:7" for bullets heavier than 70gr.
1:8" for bullets 62gr to 70gr.
1:9" for bullets up to 70gr.
1:12” for bullets up to 60gr.
1:14" for bullets up to 55gr.
1:15" for bullets up to 55gr. driven 4,100 pfs or more
1:16” for bullets up to 55gr. driven 4,300 fps or more

Does this stand to reason then that a Ruger Ranch Rifle which has a 1:9 twist would be better suited to shoot a 62 gr. bullet as opposed to a 55 gr. bullet as far as accuracy? Also would FMJ or hollow points factor in ( 1 better) on accuracy or less barrel wear?

irjkr,
The only bullets I`ve tried so far were the 75 V-Max and the Serris 80 MK`s. I ahve not been able to see what the trajectory reall is as the weather hasn`t been the best for that around here since I got the gun. I have been carring the drop chart in the Serria manual and have not had a shot at long range to see if it`s even close or not yet.
