At 300yds. or more the BT comes into it's own. It's better shape is more accurate at these ranges. At 600, it is a waste of ammo to not use a boattail bullet. It bucks the wind much better & is much more accurate. The BC is about wind as well as the rise & fall of the bullet.
Flat base bullets work fine at less than 300 & many hunting bullets are flat base. My favorite hunting load (factory) is the Cor-Loc from Remmie & it is a flat base. I load them in 8mm,30-30,303 & such all the time.
For my Husky 30-06 I use Nosler Ballistic Tip. I intend to get closer than 300,BUT, a big trophy white-tail is not gonna walk away just because he is 350-400 yds. off. I practice at long range & know I can make a killing shot at that range so the best bullet is gonna be in that rifle.
That said,if I'm hunting with a 30-30,I shoot 30-30 distance, so in the example above the Deer would get away cause it's too far for the gun.
