Mythbusters on discovery channel tonight
« on: January 17, 2007, 10:02:13 AM »
Tonights episode.

Adam and Jamie test whether the cannonballs or the shrapnel from a pirate ship's cannon caused more damage to treasure-laden vessels.

Aye Aye ...., I am taking my guess however that the ball wreaked more havoc especially if the vessel (Target) was raked......, The crew was damaged more by the oak splinters than cannon ball...., This should be good !

Don't get in the way of a cannonball but don't worry about the splinters. Cool cannonball sized holes through the pig carcasses, too.

I think they should have gone here http://www.brigniagara.org/virtualtour/fightingsail.htm and watched this http://www.brigniagara.org/movies/Live%20Fire%20Broadband.wmv . Quite a better test, and they used 24 & 32 pounders firing ball, grape and cannister. 53 rounds were fired. I don't think splinter injury/death is a myth at all. They just didn't research (or ask us) enough. I'm also pretty sure pigskin is a bit tougher than mine. I wouldn't make a good football, maybe a lampshade though. It was alot of fun to watch, and I do enjoy Mythbusters. But this is one of many episodes I've thought "just could have called me". The valve they used on the pneumatic gun is barely larger than the ones used to launch potatoes. Last air cannon they made (chicken gun/windshield) opened the valve way too slowly. The chicken left the barrel before the pressure in the tube got much past 20psi. They could have checked with the Punkin' Chunkin' dudes for how to do it right (spring loaded valve). But where else can you watch guys shoot a steel ball through pig carcasses? Gotta love it, even if it isn't done well, it is still good TV. (Are we sick?) MIKE

Was a good program.  They sometimes miss the technicalitys on there exepermants.  Their acting as pirates is still beter than the WWF wreslters acting, by far better.  Furture weapons is a good show, when will it all stop, how mutch better will the weapons get?

What the heck, I still like the artillery of centurys past.

I couldnt have said it better Bravo accuratemike .

The Mythbusters test was an injustice to Copenhagen.,The Battle of the Nile when Nelson Blew La Redoubtable out of the water.,  and Trafalgar.  When John Paul Jones took HMS Serapis from the Brits who were grappling his Bonhamme Richard and blowing it out from under his I have not yet begun to fight attitude., The Myth Busters werent there.,    Think for a minute., when 400 men are killed   does this mean 400 cannon balls were fired.., and the ship was still floating to be taken a prize?  no way !  Its was Splinters !!!   Lots of Grape shot., against the men !!!  Bar shot  and HOT SHOT in the rigging to stop their escape., burn the sheets., and take the ship !!!  Remember...., if we kill them....., we cant learn nuthin!!

You have to remember that when a defeated ship was taken by the victors, it was sold and the receipts from the sale distributed amongst the officers and men, so they had a financial interest in not damaging an enemy ship to the point it was unseaworthy and unable to be taken to a prize port.

You forget that they were talking about pirate ships, so you have to give them some leeway.  Warships were using larger caliber cannons against heavier ships.  I have to believe that solid shot and grape took down the most men.

I was a little disappointed in the show. because it just referred to a cannon up to six pounds which maybe true to the fact that it didn't cause lethel splinters but I bet a 24 pounder would. I disagree that pirate ships only had 6 pounders as they stated on the show because if they ran into a warship they are going to get out of that real fast, and bigger guns will do that.

It wasn’t a bad program.  It was entertaining if nothing else.

I have it on my DVR.  I can make a copy if anyone is interested.  I can only do VHS I don’t have a DVD burner but its better than nothing.

I'm watching the The Myth busters Pirate special...

2 inch iron ball at  600 fps? 1 PDR!

Can't find cannons to test there just aren't that many around?

I don't have high hopes for this program.

I am amazed about the lack of information they have.  They sure didn't do much research before they did this episode.  I found one post by Adam Savage that they researcehd for months...bah humbug.

And there excuse that they couldn't find a cannon, they didn't look very hard. They never checked in here and i  know we have some folks from California on here.

The 6 PDR went 340 MPH...that's only  500 fps.  Their research said they needed 900 fps.  They didn't convert the 340 MPH to fps...now you know why

Reduced velocity at impact means even a more reduced velocity upon exit.  The velocity of the splinters will be directly related to the exit velocity of the ball as it pass throught the wood.

They need a real gun!!!

They got a real gun!!! Good for them.

But one shot proves nothing.  They did get a splinter hit.  In twenty shots how many ball hits on a pig would they get versus splinter hits?

I demand more tests.

I watched it again this morning.  The only real groaner was when the guy with the cannon found out his cannonballs were to big...he never ringed them when he got them.

Then he loaded  a pound and 1/4 of powder. Lets see 2 oz per inch times 3.52 equals 7. 24 oz.  1.25 pounds time 16 oz equals 20 ozs.

Hey Norm what the original service load for a 6 PDR.

Well they did get 1430 fps.

The myth change from the first of the show to the end of the show.  The Myth at the start was more people were killed by splinters than ball.   At the end the myth that was busted was that the ball was more lethal than the splinters.  They had one splinter in one pig in one shot.

Mythbusters is one of those shows you love to hate.  I think the thing you have to remember is that it is entertainment with the guise of science.  You can see this when they conclusively disprove a myth with one test.

I did think the eye patch thing was kind of neat.
