Bore conditioning ammo.
« on: January 18, 2007, 03:27:16 PM »
Today I recieved Cabela's 2007 Shooting and Reloading catalogue.  On page 34 there is an item called Tubb Final Finish Bore Conditioning Ammo.  From the best I can tell this is factory fire lapping ammo.  Does anybody here have any real information about this product.

I got the kit once, followed the directions for use in my .308, and ruined it. When I was done, the throat was about 2 inches long and the bore was oversized for about 3/4 the length of the barrel. OK, well it didn't shoot all that great anyway so I wanted to see what happened. I have since seen several rifles in the shop that this has happened to as well. My opinion now is if you want to firelap a rifle barrel, you'd better have a bore scope and a way to measure what is happening so you don't get into trouble. Shoot one, clean, scope it out, measure it, proceed if you think you should. Firelapping can be very helpful sometimes, but used indescriminantly it can and will wreck your barrel.

I'd much rather use jb bore paste and elbow grease if I wanted to smooth out a bore.

Like Nobade I've seen ruined barrels from using firelapping, but I've seen improvements too.. I would say as the norm that this is not a process to do without careful consideration and with the foreknowledge that there is a very real danger of ruining the barrel! Generally speaking lapping with a cast in place lap is beneficial but very time consuming and not for the ameture, perhaps a very advanced ameture??  In any case The JBbore paste route is the way to go. It can do amazing things and all in the process of a thorough cleaning..

Totally  agree wwith J-B and Kroil.  It would be very difficult to ruin a barrel this way.  Another aid in cleaning/smoothing a barrel is to use superfine bronze wool on a bore brush with kroil.
