.444marlin powder for reduced loads
« on: January 18, 2007, 03:40:41 PM »
I've been working up a load for my .444 guide gun. I use a LBT 280 WFNGC and Unique powder. Has anybody else tried to use unique in large rifle cases. 13g gives a very uniform 1350fps but acccuracy is not all that great. Anybody have a powder of choice for reduced loads in these big straight wall rifle cases?  Trailboss any one?

I really like SR 4759 for reduced loads in the bigger cases like 444 and 45-70.  You can load to a real large velocity range with this from close to full power down to extremely low velocity.

I use a lot of Unique in my 45/70 with 405 gr. cast bullets and it shoots well with very little recoil , it also works in the 30/30 with cast  .

Thanks for the replies. I just got back from the range with the marlin. 14g of unique gave 1400fps with 10fps deviation and a 1" group. Went to 14.5 but velocity only increased 15-20 fps and accuracy started to open.
It is a lot harder to see signs of excess pressure in these rifles compared to my revolver, but with the crony readings, round primer edges, easy extraction, and accuracy like that I should be more than safe.
 Thanks again.
