7mm-08 imp?

anyone have experience with the 7mm-08 improved, I found the dies from Reddding, and am just wondering how much "improvement" can be expected. I searched this site back more than six months and didn't find anything about this one.

I would never have a rifle chambered in that round. You will only get abt 50 to 75 fps. more than the standard 7 - 08. I`m not saying it`s a bad round and if I found a gun with that chamber already in it and it was to cheap I would not hesitate to buy it, but the market for use wildcats is not near what it is for factory chamberings. I own 7 wildcat rifles and have bought most of them very cheap because the guy who had them could not get them sold.

thanks for the reply. I only thought of it since I bought a new take-off barrel at a gunshow and it was suggested that to get the lettering to line up that maybe the barrel would have to be set back. So I thought if it has to be set back anyway why not chamber it in AI. I think I'll gain that much FPS just from the fact that the bbl is 5.5 inches longer than the one on it now.

On a another note, I hear exactly what you're saying about wildcats. I got my 35 AI for pennies on the dollar and I saw a fellow at a show in W WA that had many rebarreled mausers in a variety of wildcats and he was almost giving them away with no takers. Seems that they sell easier if you give the new owner the dies with them. anyway, thanks again.

I've always build my Ackley's  with a new unchamber barrel.  I've got 9 of them and have always found them to be an improvement over the parent caliber if done right.  I've have always shot the parent caliber so I can use that as a gauge to how much better the Ackley is.  I did a shorten 7-08 about 14yrs ago was a write up on it in Precision shooting Magazine was called a 7x47 1/2 was set up for a 160gr GTB bulllet, thinking behind that case back then was the 7-08 was alittle over case capacity. 

If I was to build a 7-08AI I'd expect about 8/10% increase in velocity using appr 10% more powder over the standard 7-08.  Wildcatting is pretty tough alot get in over there head or just lose interest.  This year I'm going to do a 243AI and 22-250AI with a 1/8 twist barrel and maybe a 6x250AI as I really my  6x250.  I know some guys who are shooting a 25x08AI and they like it and  I shoot acouple wildcat based on the 08 case and they do very well.  Well good luck

thanks for the advice roper, like I said it was an idea. I can & will chronograph the original since it's the same cartridge but the barrel is 18-1/2" on a youth model. I am going to put a 24" new takeoff in the same caliber and chrono it again. may still have it Ackley'd at the same time as install though. It's just that my wife is 4'-11" and the rifle fits her well but the muzzle blast is more ferocious than the recoil. also from averaging loads in one manual from handgun to rifle I figured on average just putting that length barrel on it would give me an extra 274 FPS depending on powder. if the imp chamber gives me 8/10% more then it would be welcome.

Most of my barrels are 24/26" when I do an Ackley so I do have an advantage on velocity.  Friend of mine his wife is about 5' and they took a Model 7 in 7-08 cut the stock down to fit her and she has take  elk with that rifle, they look at the youth model but figure that barrel was too short (muzzle blast).  Since this is for your wife I'd just do a standard 7-08 she may not need the extra recoil but I would do a longer barrel.  My wife's first rifle was a 243 bolt action then she want something alittle different then she finally settle on a 270 Bar I had to have the stock cut down but she likes it.  well good luck
