16ga question
« on: January 18, 2007, 11:24:33 PM »
Can anyone here tell me the outside diameter of a H&R/NEF 16ga barrel at 26"?
I found an outfit in Nebraska that does choke tubes for 16ga at a reasonable cost, but OD is critical (I'm not real worried 'cuz H&R seems to be real proud of their wood and steel). Just curious, I've got a project gun I'm working on.
Thanks,

At 26" .831 and .812 at end of barrel.
Who did you find in nebraska for 16ga choke installation? I have a o/u I need to have tubes installed in.

Hi Dave, my H&R 16 gauge barrel measures 27.5" and measures .813 at the muzzle and .809 at 26". This may be an older barrel and I do know the newer barrels have a thicker OD. This from my observations and also from my gunsmith....<><.... :)

Thanks guys, as I thought, there's plenty of metal.
Upper Missouri Trading Co. 402 388 4844. Price quoted was $125 + $10 for shipping (includes 3 choke tubes). Double barrel was $150 + $10.
I have no personal knowledge of customer service, relability or workmanship (they did return my call within an hour). They were recommended to me by Deb Carlson from Carlson's choke tubes, she said that they did quality work. I've done business with Carlson's a number of times, quality work and fantastic customer service, unfortunately they don't do 16ga. Their recommendation is good enough for me.

Sweet indeed, my plan now is to send in the receiver and get 16ga and  22 Hornet barrels fitted. A true classic; 45-70/16ga/22 Hornet.
I'm going to set up the 22 Hornet with the same sights as the 45-70, a just for fun gun.
Alaska is percieved as a big game hunters paradise (and can be), but the upland bird hunting up here is phenominal. We've got 4 species of grouse, 3 species of ptarmigan, liberal bag limits (5-15 grouse per day, 5-50 ptarmigan a day depending on the hunting area) and long seasons (August-March). The 16ga will see lot's of action...

I have to get to Alaska one day. If I hadn't decided to marry a warm weather girl and settle down on the family farm I'd be on the way.
