Bought new ultra 450! How do you stom the ratteling?

I just got home with my new ultra 450.  I love it.  Im sure you guys knew of the heavy weight in the butt stock but i did not.  How much weight does it save to take it out?  I want to chop the barrel down to around 17", how much vec. will i lose doing that?  Any advice on scope/red-dot etc.  My biggest question is how do you get the releace lever to stop ratteling? ???

Congrats!! Don't shake the rifle!!! The loose release is normal, if it's not loose when the action is locked up, you have a problem!!

well i cant speak to chopping down the barrel, someone will give you that info, maybe a chart or specs. but evey handi that i have or have handeled rattles. the release lever rattles, thats hows thier supposed to be i believe. some guys  actually add weight to the stocks to help out handling the recoil. i know my 35whelen acts nicer with a few ounces of weight in the stock, i would think that a 450 would like it too.  guess non of that helped you much, so i'll shut up..

I guess the ratteling stays.  If any body is interested in having the weight (looks like a bull barrel that never got bored) ill send it to you for what ever it cost to mail it.

 My .450 Marlin is tighter than a bull's.....well, not that tight, it locks up fine, release a.o.k........and i sorta like the weight, helps with that 2 tons of muzzle energy when on safari for rogue elephants....lol

Headed to the gunsmith in the morning to get the barrel chopped down to 17 inches, muzzle brake, and teflon coating (have not decided what color yet).

Sounds like you have your mind made up, but I'd think twice before cutting that barrel. No. 1 the 450 NEEDS the barrel length to come anywhere close to advertised velocities. I had a Marlin guide gun in 450, 18" barrel, muzzle brake (effectively making it a 16 1/2" barrel. The recoil, muzzle blast and muzzle jump was horrible, great little gun, hated to get rid of it, but glad I did...

I dropped it off at the gunsmith.  Getting it chopped to 19" with brake drilled into barrel making the crown at 18".  Went ahead and got him to flute it too.  Getting all the metal teflon coated matte black and a sims recoil pad put on the back.  Should turn out to be a cool little gun.  I post picts next weekend when I get it back.

When you get used to the release, it is a non-issue. Carry it with barrel tilted up or down until ready to shoot if you are in a stalk, the gravity does the rest.

I have an Ultra in a 450 & because of the weight in the stock & I added a slip-on pad to the buttstock on to of the factory pad, the recoil is fine. The add-on pad is an option that some may not want, but I have long arms, which makes it work good. With these 2 items I see no need in abrake. I will never use one on a 450, but if I did, I would not want to cut the barrel & then add a brake, as the increased muzzel blast would be too close to my face, therefore unneccessary added noise.

Cutting the barrel will hurt the velocity, as Mr. Weiss said. I do not understand cutting the barrel, as the gun already has a 22" barrel &
because it is a single shot, the gun is about the same length as a 18" bolt gun as is, how short does it have to be? I hunt in some thick crap & I just don't see it, but to each his own.

Yep,  Burger King says it best.  HAVE IT YOUR WAY!  Have read lots on what's going to happen to vec. and what little I will lose won't ever be noticed at the <100yds I plan on using this beast for.  I am however having second thoughts about the muzzle brake.  I have 2 boys that hunt with me and I could not use it when they are with me so i Might call the gunsmith Monday and drop the brake and make the barrel 18".

And just like some of the folks at Burger King who have had too much their way, you will find it too be a little too heavy on the a$$ end when
you get it back. As you know,with the weight in the buttstock the gun is a little rear heavy now, wait till you get it back. But yea, it's your money so you may as well have it the way you want it.

True, at 100yds or less the vel. is no biggie, & if you simply like the short tube, why not? I think your decision about the brake is good.

Its Fuller Gunshop.  He is located at "the cove" near Woodberry Georgia.  His number is 706-553-2352.  If you pay for your work upfront he puts it ahead of all the pay 1/2 up front and pay at the end people.  Its works great!!  The longest i've ever had to wait was 12 days!!!!  He also is very good at what he does.

Thanks for the gunsmith info ccoorreeyy and also for the stock weight. It came today but I don't know how it got here!! Your right it is heavy, it had knocked/ripped open both ends of the envelope and could have easily sild out the gaping hole at each end of the envelope. I thinkmwhat might have saved it is it is so obvious whenever it started to come out it was pshed back in. My mailman looked as me a little strange when he gave me this heavy piece of steel and said "here, are you waiting for this?". I just said "Oh Yeah! I'm glad it's here" and took it and the rest of the mail from him and walked off. I will get a check out to you and thanks....<><.... :)
