It should fit with no problem. If you like to shoot a lot,I really think you should consider reloading.

Yes, no, maybe, and eventually...  ;D

I'd go out on a limb and say chances are that 'yes' chances are good it will fit.

However, you might consider this: if you bought the gun used, it is possible somebody put a 280 barrel on a receiver that doesn't qualify for high pressure barrels offered by the accessory program. (It has been known to happen.)

If that is the case the factory will not fit a 243 to your receiver (a 243 being one of the high pressure barrels - which are marked with * on the barrel accessory page of the factory website). This would fall under the 'no' category.

A list of serial number letter prefixes in the faqs tell you what year your receiver was manufactured, and if it was 1999 or later it qualifies for the * marked barrels and the factory will fit one in 243. This is the definitive answer yes. The best way to find out for sure is to telephone them with the serial number, they will tell you. Website and toll free number are in the faqs.

On the other hand, if you buy a used 243 barrel it may or may not fit, which is where maybe comes in - but there are ways (again in the faqs) that explain how others have fitted barrels, and we arrive at eventually because some tinkering and fitting time will be required.

So you see there are many possibilites, you just need a bit more information to determine the final answer.

I also second the motion proposed by stalking bear that you consider reloading if you plan to shoot a lot. Ammo for 243 can add up too.

Have fun.

First thing , check the number ingraved on the barrel lug to see if it matches the last 3 numbers of the ser. # on the frame , this will tell you if the barrel was factory fit to the frame .

Then go to the FAQs at the top of the CF forum and look for year of manu. to see if it will be able to be fitted with a high press. barrel by the factory .

You could also get a used barrel and fit it yourself , those directions are in the FAQs also .

If you don't reload and want to shoot a lot why not get a .223 and buy the cheap winchester white box ammo at wal-mart. Mine consistently shoots sub moa and I usually just sneak a box in when my wife sends me grocery shopping.

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

Just a heads up for ya Markus, most Walmarts don't sell it anymore, and it's not cheap when it can be found, price now is $16 to $22 a box. :'(

Please be aware that the barrels fitted by the factory for inital sale was not alway engraved with the last three numbers of the rifle's serial number. I have purchased new SB2s that had no engraving.

Wally makes a good point, I have 2 barrels that have no serial number last 3 engraved/stamped on the underlug, I also have one that has 2 sets engraved on it, apparently by the factory, one matches, one doesn't. :-\

Also some of the 280's and others that were made earlier, cannot be fitted with the high pressure barrels, even though they were originally fitted with one. I think the 2nd letter N in the serial no. was the cutoff point.  Digger
