Worn out Handi??
« on: January 20, 2007, 08:20:44 AM »
Just reading all the new posts and got to wondering... has any one ever worn out the hinge pin on a Handi and if so how long did it take?  I REALLY am becoming a Handi-holic and reading here at GBO isn't helping the addiction and I was just wondering how long they would last or if there are any problems after years of constant opening/closing/shooting even with regular maintenance.

The hinge pin is unlikely to wear out, the blueing on it will wear off sooner or later, but the pivot in the underlug is much softer material and will wear, specially if it's not lubricated. Shimming can be done at home using the barrel fitting info in the FAQs. I've done several, the first was a home job 40yrs ago on an old shotgun. I use Tetra grease on the pivot, seems to work very well.

The underlug is indeed the problem on some of these guns, mine shot loose in 70 rds on 1 barrel I have. All the others are holding up well though.  Digger

I don't use any lube.  So far I have not noticed any wear on the hinge pin or underlug.  I've had my .223 since 1996, and have not niticed any wear.  There is a reason I don't use lube, at -30 deg they don't open if there is the tinnest bit of lube on them.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
