4570 recoil with diferent bullet weight??
« on: January 20, 2007, 09:19:01 AM »
Shot my 4570 first time today LOVED IT. I was shooting rem 405g  Recoil wasnt nearly as bad as feared.  Im looking for a round for deer & bear. Now I know you can load these 4570s  how ever you want. I dont reload (yet). So what factory load would be good for mostly deer out to 150yrds.  2nd ??  lighter faster bullets= more or less recoil??  the 405s didnt bother me .
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

I am new to the 45/70's myself and the Remington 405 was the first that I shot.  They aren't bad at all, but then I shot some Hornady Leverevolution and they will punch you much more.  However, they still aren't brutal.  I can't wait until I work some good reloads up and watch my friends shoot them.  Nothing is funner than watching your buddy get pounded.

What gun are you using?

The factory 405 gr, from Remington would work good also if you want something a with more punch, look at Garrett or Buffalo Bore ammo.

Check to see it the Garrett or Buffalo Bore ammo is not to much for your handy rifle. If not give them a try, but I got to warn you, they are some heavy recoiling rounds.  :o

If you're limited to factory ammo, I'd try the Remington, Federal or Winchester 300gr loads, they're much less expensive than Buffalo Bore, and plenty good for deer. Much flatter shooting than the 405gr Rems with not that much more recoil since they're still trapdoor loads. If you want, you can always get a C&H mercury recoil reducer for the stock bolt hole and/or a Limbsaver recoil pad to reduce the felt recoil of the warmer rounds, but I don't think it will be necessary if you stay in the trapdoor loads. I shoot 350gr loads at a little over 2000fps with the above additons in a Handi, recoil is very tolerable. ;)

Buffalo Bore and most of Garrett's loads are fine in the Handi, but Garrett's 500gr and 540gr are too long for the short throat of the Handi unless you ream the throat as I did to all of mine so the 350gr and heavier bullets can be loaded to longer COL without using up powder space and increasing pressure.

Another good 45-70 load to use is the Federal 300 grain Uni-core offering...It has gotten some very good reviews on the bullet..and it has been very accurate in all of my 45-70's I have shot it in..

Try some different loads and see what your gun prefers. My Guide Gun shoots better with heavier bullets. The 300 grainers didn't group well at all. The 405's are great and a Limbsaver pad has cured the recoil problem. I loaded some 500 grain Barnes solids just for grins. They too are accurate, but recoil intensive. The Remington 405's are a great bullet for hunting or target use, and not too expensive. Garret or Buffalo Bore ammo will set you back some $$$'s.

Turkeyeye - I'm glad I don't shoot with you.....

Garrets 540 grain loads will get your attention in a hurry. If dealing with the same amout of ft.lbs of energy, the heavier bullets will always generate more recoil.  Plug in the numbers to any recoil formula, rifle or hand gun, and this will always be true. It is simple physics. The heavier bullets will alway cuase recoil to be greater because you have to move a heavier object  and rifle momentum is greater in the opposite direction, when pushing against something heavier.
