30-06 to Survivor conversion under way
« on: January 20, 2007, 09:19:08 AM »
Got the 30-06 Handi in synthetic today.  Thank you all who humored my over reaction to the forend without having it in hand first.  I'll scope it and shoot it soon as is.  The stock appears to have a really nice fit to this barrel so minimal accurizing is probably all I can expect.  I feel very fulfilled in this purchase.  The construction and the feel of these Handi's is very solid and I like the weight.  :) I'll hit Midway tonight and gear it up.

P.S. Any rex on where to buy cheap 30-06 ammo?  Whose your favorite for factory seconds?

Gander Mtn sells Winchester White box .30-06 with 147 gr FMJ.  I believe it goes for $11.97.  A buddy of mine uses these for target practice in his Savage 111 and does well with them.  Some local Wal Marts have been selling Federal Power Shoks (Blue box) for $9.97.  Dunhams usually sells Olympic (Greece) and Hot Shot (From Bosnia, distributed by Century Arms).  Both have brass cases, boxer primer's and are in the $10-$12 range.

The Federal shoots best in all my '06's.  I've not had much luck with the Hot Shot ammo.  Olympic shoots well in my bolt actions, but not the single shots.

This Walmart location doesn't have much as far as ammo selection so I'll track down yur rex online.  Today I asked the sporting goods dept. manager if they were going to continue to sell ammunition after the firearms were discontinued.  He wasn't sure.  Seems like an all or nothing kind of thing to me.  It would seem to me that Walmart would have some backstock of firearms.  After I left I wished I'd asked if there will be any special deals on the last remaining guns.  I'll call him.  We hit it off pretty good.  He used to track a lot when he was young, he said, but that now he's a bit too old to treck around and stalk deer.  Seemed like he missed it. Said it's been fourty years since he hunted which means there were a lot of years he wasn't too old to hunt.  Who knows?  Nice guy though.  Wished me safe hunting and plotted back into the frenzy that is Saturday at Walmart.  Yipes!  Thanks again everyone.  I made a good buy complicated.  I've just been so filled with anticipation that my excitement passed over to stress.  Not any more.  I love the Handi.  We'll be good friends.     8)
