Iron Sights
« on: January 20, 2007, 01:06:46 PM »
As stated in another thread, I just put a Sportster .22WMR on layaway @ Wally-World this morning. I am a bit confused as to whether or not it will actually come with iron sights, as H&R states on their website, and on their 2007 catalog. On SSI's website, the model that I ordered is listed as follows:

SS1-M22 SPORTSTER SYN 22MG RS 20

I can only assume that the RS stands for Rifle Sight. Can anyone provide insight into this for me? I was really set on iron-sights. I just hope thats what they'll send me.

I believe all the 22 caliber models, including the 22 mag have iron sights.
It's only the 17 caliber M2 and HMR that don't come with iron sights.

By the way, I ordered the Sportster 22lr today also from Wally World.
I really wish I could have gotten the '06 version with the Monte Carlo stock and scope rail...if I ever wanted to scope it.
Maybe I'll luck out and they'll still have the '06 versionsl in stock.
Either way, for plinking with the kids the straight stock and iron sights should be just fine if that's what they send me.

Thats pretty cool that we both ordered our Sportster's on the same day. Did they tell you the order was going to be placed on Monday, or did they explain anything to you? I basically had to ask them everything....they acted like they didnt want to tell me how the process was gonna go, as far as ordering, how long it could take, etc. From what I can tell, they should have irons on 'em, if they dont, I'm gonna make a phone call to H&R and see what can be done. So, is this your first Sportster?

MI.sabot, there is no problem with mounting a scope on a gun with a standard straight stock. Many here, myself included, prefer this setup for hunting guns, especially in the woods where shots may be a bit quick. You always have the option of mounting a scope with that type of stock, not so the other way around. With a Monte Carlo stock it is almost impossible to line up iron or open sights because you cannot get your eye low enough to see down the barrel. If you want to mount a scope at some time all you need is a rail, some rings and an inexpensive scope and your in business. Your better off with the non-Monte Carlo stock, it's more versatile. Good luck and both of you, have fun and enjoy your new guns....<><.... :)

I assume that most everyone here uses scopes with their .22's; is this because yall either wanted to scope it to begin with, or it just didnt come with irons? I live in SE Georgia, and the brush is pretty thick around here. So there aint many places that a scope will do you any good except over pastures and fields.

MSP:

I agree with everything you said, but is the 2007 sportster drilled and tapped to accept the scope rail?
The 2007 catalog makes no mention of it.
And since they did away with the MC stock and no longer include the scope rail, it makes me wonder if it's D&T.

My only reason for wanting the MC stock version is that I already have an extra straight stock laying around the house.
This way, if and when I ever wanted to put a scope on it I'd be ready to go.

I am not sure of it being D&T'd  but it would surprise me if it were not. It is an inexpensive procedure anyway and there is plenty of metal to work with on a rimfire. You could even do it yourself with a drill press (use a vise if you can), a drill bit. and a single tap, or H&R will do it for about $10-$15 if I remember correctly. That said I think your barrel will come through D&T'd. Let us know the gun comes, D&T'd or not. Aslo try your new gun with a scope and the straight stock, I think you will be surprised at how well it works and how comfortable and quick it is....<><.... :)

I would really like to give mine a camo paint job when it arrives....maybe a flat OD green, and light sand/tan colors, contrasted with some black....and get some stenciled leaf patterns too....be looking pretty sweet. I gotta get off my butt and find a good sling for it also....
