Rebarrel a Guide Gun? New Pix added
« on: January 21, 2007, 07:28:14 AM »
Ok, I have just acquired this Guide Gun Marlin and have decided that the 45-70 is indeed a fun cartridge to load and shoot...and by the way thanks for the info some guys gave me about flaring the case neck to stop the case crushing.
The only problem I have is really a cosmetic issue...I just do not like the looks of the gun with the short barrel...Numrich sells original Marlin 22" barrels for the 1895 action for around $70...My question is "Can it be rebarreled without too much trouble?"
Any details to help me achieve this feat will be appreciated...

I think it would be cheaper to sell the Guide Gun, and buy the regular 1895.  I love the looks of the Guide Gun.

I bet you want to keep the straight grip with a longer barrel, right? I would get a gunsmith to do it as the breech may have to be machined for headspace. There are several gunsmiths that will do it, but make sure you get one that has experience with leverguns. I think Marlin will rebarrel it for about $200, and that includes the barrel (Marlin 800-544-8892).

Aardvark - if Marlin can't do what you want done with that Guide Gun then contact the Montana Rifleman - they rebarrel lots of lever actions.  If you decide on a rebarrel I would also suggest you go to the Beartooth Bullets website and see what those folks have in stock for hardcast bullets and load data.  HTH.  Mikey.

"I bet you want to keep the straight grip with a longer barrel, right?"

Then sell the guide gun, and buy the Cowboy.

Swampman - Right of course. My mental image of a Guide Gun always goes to the GS version, so that's what I was thinking.

Shouldn't be too hard to do.  I had a local 'smith replace the standard 24" barrel on my 444 with one off of a Outiftter barrel I bought on ebay for $40.  It cost me $50 for him to install the barrel and do the necessary machining. Now I have a short barrelled 444 with a pistol grip.  Nice boar buster!

If you don't want them to send the old barrel back to you, Marlin will rebarrel an 1895G with a 22" barrel for $150.  You will likely be into that much buying a barrel from Numrich and having your 'smith fit it.

Sounds like a good deal, with Marlin installing your new barrel and returning the old one too.

When you post that barrel for sale please do it on the classified ads forum, not here on a discussion forum.

Well I got the gun back from Marlin today and I am impressed with the deal I got from them...For $100 plus $25 for shipping, They installed the 22" barrel I bought from Numrich an returned my 18" ported barrel...They even put on a set of sights for that price...I now own a straight lever Model 1895S...that is the barrel stamp...Here's the pix:

I see they put the tall front sight on it for you.  When I bought my 1895 in 1977 the front sight was so low it barely worked with the Remington 405s.  Didn't take long to put one about that tall on it when I started reloading for it.  Enjoy your new rig, its a dandy!
