Introducing Handiholics.com website
« on: January 21, 2007, 11:18:11 AM »
Howdy y'all, I want to let you know about my new website www.handiholic.com. I am not ashamed to admit I am a Handiholic. I had a bit of a medical (and financial hit) a couple of months ago and parted with some of my toys. To continue to get a satisfying Handi fix I decided to put together a website. It kept me occupied and out of trouble for the last while (the weather has been pretty crummy so I was inside most of the time anyway) and also allowed me to regain some perspective so I can stop feeling sorry for myself.

I consider myself just an average Handiholic. Also a tinkerer, shooter, and reloader. Though I am not an artist or precision craftsman, I love seeing modifications, and learning about technical details. Though I am not an accuracy freak, I love accurate rifles and precision loading recipes others use. Though I am not (any longer) a fanatic hunter, I love to hear stories from those who are.

So primarily this website is for me. It is a labor of love, and a way to stay connected one of my interests. It is also for you Handiholics (and others) who care to read it and contribute to it.

The site can be considered to be more or less "under construction" for awhile. Check back regularly for updates and new stuff, and do not hesitate to give feedback and critiques. There are links on the site for comment, and to submit pics and stories of your own. It will be much appreciated.

And speaking of appreciation, I wish to express mine for those who generously allowed the use of some of their pictures and resources as I built the site.

Thanks to Matt who does such an awesome job managing this GBO website, and who provided the logo he designed a couple of weeks ago. And to Graybeard for this wonderful place to hang out.

Thanks to Quickdtoo (Tim) who provided several pictures of his fabulous Handi collection, and wrote a story about his first experiences with a Handi type shootin' iron.

My appreciation also to those members of Graybeards H&R/NEF forum who just said yes when I told them what I was up to. Stimpylu, mt3030, and Swampman all unhesitatingly allowed me to use their pics for the opening of the website.

In addition there is a story from 6mmbr (Chris) about his early experiences with a Topper In 22 Remington Jet that will go on the site in due time. Hopefully others will have pics and/or articles to contribute shortly as well.

And I will also thank my lovely and patient wife for being the support she has been, and continues to be to me, while I make my way through these stimulating times. The trip would be 'way less fun without her.

And finally, I cannot neglect H&R 1871 and Marlin, the company without whom we would not have these most agreeable (yet sometimes challenging) toys with which to entertain ourselves. A constant hope lives in the breasts of dedicated Handiholics that the folks at the upper echelons of the organization will implement more of our suggestions.

Cheers
Kerry

Thanks for looking at the site guys, I had fun doing it and will keep at it as long as I do... have fun that is!

I like it you did a great job on the sight only thing missing is my custom Ultra ;D
Jason

Jason, I would be happy to rectify the situation if you would be so kind as to forward me a pic, and a short description of your custom Ultra.  ;D Use one of the buttons on the site, or click on my email symbol on this posting.

And that goes for anyone who wants to contribute a pic or item.

Cheers

I want to add some stuff on the site about international Handiholics... so if anyone is communicating with them, would you mind pointing them to this thread.

I know pascalp from France has posted pics of his muffled 45-70 and I have sent him a couple of PMs, but so far no response. And if I remember correctly, dodd3 in Australia has had some pics of his BC too.

And for the record, our Canadian brothers are included as international ...

The last quote before today was  from this was was from '07... is it possible his domain registration ran out for 09?

Most likely, Kerry hasn't been on much, but he has been on lately, he's old tho, probably forgot to renew it, or just maybe let it go!!!  ;D

I think close to 75% of sites which are set up each year end at the first renewal of their domain or hosting fee or before. Those that make it past the second renewal are down to a much smaller percentage and are far more likely to see a third renewal.

Folks it's one hell of a lot of work to set up and keep a site operational and quite frankly most who set them up have no clue the amount of effort and money it takes to keep one running. The first time you get hacked is a real experience and one many do not survive.

Those that last five years are likely to hang around a while. I've kinda lost count but I think we're in our 12th year now. Mess up just once on not renewing that domain and it's all for nothing. Marlin Owner's almost found that out the hard way recently.

Tim

I did let it go. Had too much stuff happening in other areas of my life, and Handiholic.com was created just for fun. I started it when I had more time on my hands than sense. I have kept the domain name (just let the hosting lapse) 'cause I figure I'll get the site, or something like it, back up one day. Who knows, I may again have more time than sense... especially as there have been a few sensible-challenged moments in my life.

And ya, I'm gettin' old, but I've still got a couple of years to SocSec . A kid at a movie theater asked me if I was a senior the other day (it must be the weathered look and aura of wisdom I project) but he made an potentially fatal error when he asked my wife the same question! (She's many years from SocSec.)

In any case Tim, I expect I'll always being younger than you.   ;D  ;)

Only a couple of years 'til SS?  Man, that's not old, that's mature.  I'm also mature.  Only difference is a few more visits to the doctor; a little longer in the AM to get the joints loosened; a few more trips to the bathroom at night; a little more desire for the afternoon nap; cheaper coffee at McD's; newsprint that gets smaller every year; and that long wait for those "golden years," whatever they are.
