tilted scope base
« on: January 21, 2007, 11:59:32 AM »
I just bought my first handi, a heavy barrel in .223. The scope mount is tilted to the left a full bubble. Anyone else ever have this problem? Also the forend stock had a ding in it and the finish can be scraped by gently running a finger nail over it. I thouht these were supposed to be decent rifles for the price. Or did I just luck out and get a bad one?

sounds to me like a bad rail, or is has crap (chips/metal shavings something like that) between it and the barrel.  just my thought, unless this is something common i dont know about.

As for the scope rail being off , i never checked any of mine so i don't know what to tell you there , now for the forarm it could have been damaged in shipping or at the gun shop , the fit and finish on most of these rifles is a sometimes thing , sometimes you get a real good one and sometimes you get a not so good one .

I have found that the way they shoot more than makes up for the looks . i know this don't help much , you could give H&R a call in the AM to see what they say about it , their number is in the FAQs of this site or on their site too .

Welcome Overland!

It's a good idea to give these rifles a thorough cleanup(see FAQ sticky) and to dismount the scope rail, cleanout the screw holes and if necessary, fit it to the barrel(This is probably a good idea for any factory-installed scope/rail.

I am sure the factory (customer service) would make it right but for a quicker fix I would just take it back where you bought it and demand another one. Let them deal with the factory....<><.... :)

Thanks much for the information. I am going to pull the base off, clean up the holes, lap the base to the barrel and see if that helps. As for the stock, the ding in the side if pretty small and theres a good chance I can steam it out. The more I look at the stock the more I think I will strip and refinish it. Who knows, if it turns out to be a keeper I might stick one of the walnut stocks I saw advertised here. Other wise it seems not to be to bad of a little rifle. I have a bolt action varment rifle but it's a little large and heavy to carry around all day. I got the handy to carry when I go wondering around it the woods and get a chance to blast a few crows.
Thanks again for the help, take care.

Well what was the outcome overland? Did you find anything under the scope rail or were the holes drilled off center? Is the gun going back to the dealer you bought it from, the factory, or were you able to correct the problem?....<><.... :)
