Congrats on the new gun. My 1st gun was a topper 20ga. I have never hunted with a 410 but from just about everypost I read about them they seem to pattern better with the 2 1/2" shells. Let us know how you do.

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

I suggest you carefully pattern your gun with both short and long shells in the shot sizes you think of using. My old 410 is full choke and shoots short #6s  very tightly out to 25-28 yards, even better than 3" shells. I can put it on a sqirrel's nose and not put shot in the shoulder. Also note that for me at least, I lost squirrels with good shots using 7 1/2 shot at that distance. Its just too light of shot for their tough skin. Rabbits are not as tough.  You will have to work out what is best for your rabbit hunting. BTW, mine will shoot the slugs into a pie plate at 40 yards with just a bead sight and you may want to check that out in case you spot a coon sleeping on a branch way high in a tree. It happens. Mine does not shoot #4s well at all.  My first deer kill as a boy was with a slug from a 410 at 25 yards. Perfect chest shot on a small buck with full passthrough and a very short run. You will like that 410. Good Hunting!
