Northwood's traps ?? & jump traps??
« on: May 04, 2003, 05:26:01 AM »
Hi:

I have a few questions about Northwood's traps and jump traps.

   1.  How is the quality of the  old Northwood's line of traps?   I was looking through a catalog  and all I could find in stock was  # 1 coilspring and  #2 1/2 longspring Northwood's traps. 2. Is the 2 1/2 Northwood's single longspring better than the Blake & lamb # 2 1/2 single longspring trap?

3. What is the jawspread of the victor and blake & lamb 1 1/2 jump trap?
Can the 1 1/2 jump trap be used for fox?

4. Are there any advantages of using a jump trap instead of a coilspring trap?

                                                                                 Thanks,

coyote, the Northwoods traps were a very good line of traps. That Is probably the reason victor bought them out.
The northwoods #2 1/2 was a strong trap but was a lot rougher in quality than the Blake and lamb. The single longspring 2 1/2s were not a big item in the trapping industry. The same can be said about the jump traps--the coilspring traps are a much better trap then the jumps. That is why they are no longer made. The jump traps have thin jaws, they do not rise up evenly when sprung .You are much better off with coilspring traps and a jump is not a very good fox trap.Or should I say the coil is a much better fox trap? Save yourself a lot of grief and frustration--go with coilsprings.  Tom

Bogmaster:

Thanks for the information. As for the coilspring traps, I noticed there is a lot of differences  of opinion when it comes to square jaws verses round jaws on coilspring traps. What do you think is better? I did notice that bridger has square jaws and the bridger trap is well liked by many trappers , yet the old square jawed victor coilspring  is not liked to well. Do know what is the differance between the victor square jawed coilspring and the bridger square jawed coilspring trap?

                                                                               Thanks,

Coyote, the victor #2 square jaw was not in the same league as the bridger #2. tHE VICTOR BECAME POPULAR BECAUSE IT WAS PROBABLY  the first coil with an adjustable pan.It was like a lot of the victors produced at that time.Thin jaw, thin baseplate and easily torn apart by coyotes.Just hold a bridger next to an old square jaw victor and you will easily see the differance--or weigh them each--see which one has more steel   lol. Good luck.  Tom
